  • Looking Back

1 Years Ago August 24, 2000 Cheney took a big step toward moving the city's police force to the former Ball and Dodd building on G Street when the city council voted 6-1 to allow Mayor Amy Jo Sooy to enter into a purchase agreement with property owners. Councilman Curt Huff was the lone dissenting vote. The fire chief of Medical Lake, Cliff Denman, was put on paid administrative leave based on a complaint received by Mayor Jim Hill. No further details on the complaint were released and any action on the matter had to await t...

McKinley's mission leads to Kenya, Part 1 By LUELLA DOW Contributor Seven weeks in Kenya is not a vacation. Erin McKinley didn't go there for that purpose. She traveled there as a young missionary to help and encourage the people. She said, “There were 35 of us in the missionary group. We spent most of our time at Rurii. English is the official language, but the traditional language is Swahili.” For the first week and a half they stayed in Nairobi where they learned about Kenya's culture and practiced Swahili. Then they split...

  • Teaching self-assurance behind the wheel

New Airway Heights driving school aims to get beyond the instruction manual to teach students good driving habits By RYAN LANCASTER Staff Reporter For those who've held their driver's license for more than a few years, getting behind the wheel to begin the daily commute is probably about the time automatic pilot kicks in. Harold Denton never wants the new drivers who finish his course to get to that point. By preserving a beginner's awareness of what's happening around their vehicle, he's confident his students can steer... Full story

  • Gardening in Our Area

‘Tis the season to clean out your jars and prepare for canning By LaVERLE McCANDLESS Contributor “All my life through, the new sights of nature made me rejoice like a child.” Marie Curie What new sight has made you want to jump up and down and rejoice like a child? For me, it was seeing the corn tassels peeking out through the tops of the corn stalks this year, which means corn on the table in the near future! Another is seeing the blossoms and the tiny starts of beans--whooee! Gardening is fun; you just never know what... Full story

  • Guest Commentary: Republicans are engaging in a birthright blunder

Editorial from The Detroit News, Aug. 17, 2010 A number of Republican Congressmen and others are talking about amending the Constitution so that children of illegal immigrants who are born in this country would no longer automatically be granted citizenship. If they are serious, this is bad policy. If they are simply engaged in election year pandering, it is bad politics. In recent weeks, such figures as House Republican Leader John Boehner of Ohio, Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, Sens. Lindsey Graham of South... Full story

  • Letters to the editor

Pricing of 20 gallon, 64 gallon refuse containers not fair I missed the last Cheney Council meeting, so I would like to comment on the solid waste rate proposal that will be adopted at the Aug. 24 Council meeting. I do not understand why the city would charge those who use 20 gallon cans twice the rate per gallon as those using the larger 64 gallon refuse cans. Cheney residents have spent over a year giving input to our new city plan and one of the policies to be included in the plan is to “increase recycling of household a...

  • New tower will spread reach of KYRS community radio

By RYAN LANCASTER Staff Reporter Like most public radio listeners, I don't particularly enjoy radio fund drives, those long, irregularly scheduled program interruptions when broadcasting staff plead for open wallets to keep them on the air. But as monotonous as these drives might sometimes be, I can see the reasons backing them up. I also understand that without stations that rely on public funds I'd have to turn the dial north into the for-profit neighborhood of really annoying – and annoyingly frequent – radio adv... Full story

By BECKY THOMAS Staff Reporter Annual street construction is underway in Cheney. The goal is to begin work as soon as...
