The initial release of results from the Aug. 17 primary election in Spokane County shows incumbent Dist. 3 county commissioner, Democrat Bonnie Mager, well on her way to victory. Who her opponent will be in the Nov. 2 general election, however, appears up in the air.

Mager earned 9,154 votes, 47 percent in the initial figures released by the Spokane County Elections Office at 8:01 p.m. Tuesday. She was holding a commanding lead over a trio of Republicans, Al French (3,467, 18 percent), Jeff Holy (3,045, 16 percent) and Steve Salvatori (2,938, 15 percent).

In the race for Spokane County Prosecutor, Democratic challenger Frank Malone garnered 20,010 votes or 30 percent and leads incumbent Steve Tucker with 17,938 and 27 percent. Chris Bugbee was third with 13,086 votes and 20 percent.

Incumbent Ralph Baker received 20,981 votes, 31 percent, in the race for Spokane County Assessor. His likely November opponent could be Vicki Horton (14,502, 21 percent), Andrew Jackson (12,943, 19 percent) or Sadie Cooney (11,535, 17 percent).

This was a top-two primary with the two candidates who have the most votes, regardless of party affiliation, advancing to the Nov. general election.

The Elections Office counted 72,471 ballots Tuesday. Additional ballots will arrive in the mail and be processed during the remainder of the week. Final voter turnout is expected to exceed 40 percent.
