  • Cheney among recipients of $312 million Department of Ecology awards

    SCOTT DAVIS, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 23, 2021

CHENEY – The city’s Purple Pipe Project was among the recipients of a $312 million award from the Washington State Department of Ecology in conjunction with ongoing water quality projects in the state. The loan to Cheney totals $21.8 million and will aid in upgrading the Wastewater Treatment Reclamation Plant (WTRP) and the water distribution system to emit reclaimed water on “turf grass and landscape irrigation at City parks, athletic fields, and school grounds.” The intent behind employing recycled water is to limit w...

  • AH public art ordinance awaits council approval

    RILEY KANKELBERG, Staff Intern|Updated Jul 22, 2021

AIRWAY HEIGHTS – The Planning Commission took another step forward in the city’s Public Art Plan at their July 14 meeting. They voted to take the latest ordinance to the City Council for a public hearing. The ordinance will add a chapter specifically entitled “Public Art” to the city’s municipal code. The planning process for this project began in 2018. When the city received a public art proposal from an external agency, they realized their lack of public art policy made it difficult to address any proposals. The Public Ar...

  • Read all about the election

    JOHN McCALLUM, Managing Editor|Updated Jul 22, 2021

SPOKANE — Two new elements will be in play in the upcoming August primary election — one with a physical manifestation the other less so, but with a possibly large presence nonetheless. The first element comes via a legislative mandate during the last session in Olympia, requiring all 39 Washington counties to print a voter pamphlet. The size —and subsequent cost —will depend upon the number of races and measures appearing on the ballot, with small counties printing a 1-2 page flyer stuffed in the same envelope as the bal...

  • Airway Heights corrects affordable housing incentives

    RILEY KANKELBERG, Staff Intern|Updated Jul 22, 2021

AIRWAY HEIGHTS — The City Council looked at a resolution concerning additional affordable housing incentives at their July 12 study session. Due to the city’s steadily increasing growth, affordable housing is a priority for the city. The history behind the resolution is a long one. The process began in 2012 when a group called the Fairchild Air Force Base Protection and Community Empowerment Project group was formed. They found that certain points of the city, particularly on the southern side, were part of an accident pot...

  • Cheney to try out Daupler

    JOHN McCALLUM, Managing Editor|Updated Jul 22, 2021

CHENEY — Beginning July 20, afterhours calls for utility services will no longer be handled by the Police Department but will instead be directed to a new incident response management system provided by Daupler, Inc. The City Council approved a 12-month contract for the pilot program at its Nov. 24, 2020 meeting, and officials with the Light and Public Works departments began a six-month setup process in January. “Now, we’re ready to switch over to it for the next six months for implementation,” Light Department Director Stev...

  • Innocence until proven guilty extends to elections

    JOHN McCALLUM, Managing Editor|Updated Jul 22, 2021

The Spokane County Elections Department has conducted 21 recounts of specific races over the past 20 years, according to the department’s online archives. To me, that indicates an inclination towards openness and transparency in the electoral process, not just the number of recounts but also the easy availability of the outcomes. Add to this the department’s willingness to allow election observers, and I feel pretty good about trusting the reliability of elections in our region, whatever they may be. Other voters should too...

  • It's a crime to trust God

    JAMES A. HAUGHT, Contributor|Updated Jul 22, 2021

Fundamentalists and Republicans who dominate Mississippi put “In God We Trust” on car license plates, forcing all drivers to promote religion. The only way a motorist can avoid the motto is to pay $30 extra for a special plate of one’s choosing. Gov. Tate Reeves declared that the 2019 action reflects the core values of the Deep Dixie state. American Atheists, Mississippi humanists and others filed a federal lawsuit saying the motto violates the separation of church and state guaranteed by the First Amendment of the Bill...

  • Senate bill smells of critical race theory

    Updated Jul 22, 2021

The last couple of Cheney School Board meetings, they received comments by citizens on curriculum such as Critical Race Theory and sex ed. I tried to remember back to all the meetings I have been to and I could not remember a time that the board actually discussed specific curriculum at an open meeting. In fact the board rarely discusses anything at the meetings. The public is hard pressed to even know what are the specifics of what is on the agenda. The agenda is very vague, and you have to ask for more details. No wonder...

She has traveled extensively around the United States, even obtained her M.S. in South Dakota. However, she wanted to come back to Cheney where she obtained her first degree at EWU, because she...

  • Washington State Trivia

    Delores Kriete|Updated Jul 22, 2021

A while back I received a phone call that turned out to be a wrong number. The person calling didn’t have access to the phone book in our area, so I looked up the number for them. After I was done, I started flipping through the North Central Washington phone book and found some trivial points of interest I was surprised to see. I found a list of the Washington symbols. Many of them I already knew. For instance, I knew Washington is the only state named after a president. Its flower is the Rhododendron, and the bird is the Go...

  • Critical race theory discussed at Cheney School Board meeting

    SCOTT DAVIS, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 22, 2021

CHENEY — Issues and concerns relating to critical race theory – including questions on curriculum — were discussed at the Cheney School Board meeting on July 14. The increased interest in cultural education has emerged in the wake of new legislation passed by the state, “concerning professional learning, equity, cultural competency, and dismantling institutional racism in the public school system,” as stated in the final bill report for ESSB 5044. Cheney Public School Superintendent Robert Roettger reiterated that the legis...

AIRWAY HEIGHTS — Like the rest of Washington state, the police department will be adjusting their tactics this month. Eleven new bills, signed by Gov. Jay Inslee in May, will go into effect on July 25. These bills are a result of recommendations made last year by the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs to improve the public service of law enforcement. They are part of a police accountability package. The biggest change in day-to-day police activity will come from House Bill (HB) 1054. Under this bill, chokeho...

  • Juggling a full schedule

    JOHN McCALLUM, Managing Editor|Updated Jul 22, 2021

CHENEY — Like most of us, new Eastern Washington University student trustee Auriana Mitchell claims it’s difficult for her to be in two places at once. A look at the Liberty High School graduate and Cheney-area native’s career so far makes one wonder, however, if she hasn’t somehow perfected that ability — if not physically, then at least mentally and intellectually. The third-generation EWU student’s career at the university where her parents and one set of grandparent...
