  • Looking Back

1 Years Ago April 27, 2000 Cheney police spent the week before Earth Day touring the lush green found in the basement of a Third Street house, much to the chagrin of the residents who were growing marijuana. Acting on a tip, officer Steve Kelly and detective Rick Campbell secured a warrant to search the house in the 200 block of Third. Roy D. Marsh was arrested for manufacture of a controlled substance. • Red rolls over White in last spring scrimmage

FROM STAFF AND NEWS SERVICE REPORTS For the fi rst time in a number of years, Eastern Washington University’s Red-White scrimmage has been a tightly scripted, well regulated dress-rehearsal event. The Eagles got to go a little different direction last Saturday. First, players were drafted onto either the Red or White team. Then a wrinkle or two were thrown into what turned out to be a dominating performance on both sides of the ball for the Red team, a 20-0 winner on a windy day at Woodward Field. Not only did the Red team...

  • Cardinals GNL baseball split with Hounds

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter Medical Lake started off things the right way last Friday in Great Northern League Baseball play, but it was the finish that killed the Cardinals. A two-out single in the bottom of the sixth inning from Ryan Owens keyed a four run inning that broke a 2-2 tie and propelled the Cards to a 6-2 win over Pullman in the first game of a doubleheader. Ryan Wagner tossed a complete game, striking out 10 and walking one for the Cardinals to go 4-1 on the season. Medical Lake’s big inning started with a...

  • Gardening in Our Area

Natural remedies with help with pests By LaVERLE McCANDLESS Contributor “The smell of spring is so invigorating…I could enjoy the returning birds, leaves and flowers, but it wouldn't be the same without the good smell of wet, warming earth.” Holly Daigle Ah, yes! I would add a nice gentle rain to wash the dust off the plants and trees to clean the air and bring out the aroma of dampened earth. Now it's back to taking care of pesky pests that will try to mess up your yard and garden by chomping, chewing and rasping the leave...

  • New softball coach gets same old result

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter Medical Lake’s girl’s softball team may remain winless through 14 games, but not hopeless. The Cards suffered another pair of Great Northern League defeats, 15- 5 and 16-2 to Pullman last Friday to fall to 0-8 in the GNL and 0-14 overall. The most recent setbacks came under new coach – former assistant Tim Blakley – who took over the helm when Gai Daily recently resigned. “I’ve been with the squad the entire year so I’ve seen where we were and where we’re at now and we’ve...

  • ML boys also toying with new tennis combinations

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter The Medical Lake boys’ tennis team is doing a little late-season tinkering, just like the girls, in an effort to find a combination that will perform best in the postseason. The Cardinals came off last week splitting a pair of Great Northern League matches, losing to Cheney 4-3 and beating Riverside 7-0 along with losing a nonleaguer, 4-3 at Gonzaga Prep. “Leon (Johnson) played well at No. 1 singles,” coach Justin Blayne said, summing up the week. Blake Andrews at No. 2 and No. 4, Jake... Full story

  • ML group uses flamingos as kids camp fundraiser

By RYAN LANCASTER Staff Reporter Those who don't know better might presume a flock of tastelessness has descended on Medical Lake. But to anyone who wakes up tomorrow morning and sees a neighbor's yard, or their own, overrun by pink flamingo lawn ornaments – do not be alarmed. It's not the work of Floridian terrorists or some gaudy throwback trend, simply an effort to send more kids to camp. The local chapter of Young Life, a Christian-based non-profit geared toward high school students, is raising money to slash the price of...

  • Medical Lake girls have new late season strategy

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter So when does the game of tennis take on the feel of chess? As the post-season tournaments loom, that’s when. That’s what Medical Lake’s girls’ tennis team coach Dawn Eliassen has in her sights as her Cards take part in what she called “a brutal week” of competition. The Cardinals hit the road for matches in Colville (April 27) and then in Pullman, today (April 29). Then it’s on to the non-stop competition of the annual Inland Empire Tournament that runs all day Friday and Saturday.... Full story

  • A Cheney Free Press FeatureDeAngelo Jones shows what he has to say

Cheney senior leads by example because friends and family have shown him that's the best way By JOHN McCALLUM Editor Some folks will tell you that Cheney High School senior DeAngelo Jones is one of the best athletes to grace the Blackhawks' hallways. Others will say he's one of the nicest “kids” you'll ever meet. Sit down and talk awhile with him and his demeanor and ready smile confirms the latter. Watch him bust a long run on the football field, beat somebody off the dribble for a dunk on the basketball court or fly leg...

  • Great individual efforts highlight Medical Lake’s track outing

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter From a team standpoint, last Thursday’s Great Northern League track meet with Cheney was just another case where undermanned Medical Lake came up on the short end of the score. From the individual standpoint, however, there were significant improvements once one peeled back a few layers from the Blackhawks’ wins - 91-49 on the boys’ side and 98-45 for the girls. Most notable among the Medical Lake efforts might have been the sweep Emily Pake accomplished in throwing events. Pake swept thr...

  • Medical Lake's first mock DUI puts risks of drunk driving on dramatic display

By RYAN LANCASTER Staff Reporter Tears flowed outside of Medical Lake High School last Thursday as students watched emergency workers pull a classmate's body from the wreckage of a head-on collision. Some tears were genuine, a reaction to the grisly reality that can result from driving drunk, while others were scripted, the product of months of hard work by members of the MLHS leadership class in preparation for the school's first ever mock DUI demonstration. Hundreds of teachers and students gathered near the north end of... Full story

  • Doubles teams lead Hawks’ boys to ML win

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor There’s nothing like a win to take the sting out of disappointing losses. The Cheney boys’ tennis team got a little salve for the shellacking they received from Clarkston and 4A Mead two weeks ago by winning the last two of three matches to edge Medical Lake 4-3 at home Tuesday. The feeling didn’t likely last long though as the Blackhawks took it on the chin in Pullman, losing 7-0 to the Greyhounds Thursday. Against the Cardinals David Denenny had good shot angles but struggled with unforced erro...
