Cheney police spent the week before Earth Day touring the lush green found in the basement of a Third Street house, much to the chagrin of the residents who were growing marijuana. Acting on a tip, officer Steve Kelly and detective Rick Campbell secured a warrant to search the house in the 200 block of Third. Roy D. Marsh was arrested for manufacture of a controlled substance.

The Cheney Middle School was locked down following receipt of news that a student planned to bring a gun to school. The incident stemmed from an altercation on the bus the day before.

City crews planted the replacement for the stolen Christmas tree in front of the Cheney library.

After a protest from a citizen and concern from a councilman, the City of Cheney will review further a recently imposed noise ordinance.

Medical Lake is beginning work on the North Trail project that will run around the perimeter of the wastewater treatment plant.

The Cheney Blackhawks' soccer team finds itself in the driver's seat with a 7-3-2 overall record as the season winds down. Cheney is likely one of three of the four Frontier League teams that will make the post-season.

Medical Lake's track teams scored a pair of Northeast A League wins over Deer Park. The girls scored a 100-25 decision while the boys won 82-61. Jonny Varona and Adrienne Traylor both dominated the weight events.

May 3, 1990

When it comes to the possibility of housing state inmates nearby, the West Plains communities of Cheney, Medical Lake and Airway Heights have offered three distinctive different opinions. On one side, Cheney said it was not interested while on the opposite end Airway Heights was very much so. Medical Lake, a city with plenty of experience in the matter was not saying much one way or the other regarding plans by the state to build a new medium security prison with a minimum of 1,024 beds.

Each and every day, some 22 million people visit the golden arches of McDonalds' restaurants worldwide. Cheney residents will soon be part of that as the company announced it would locate here by October.

With the announcement that Eastern Washington University president Dr. B. Dell Felder would be leaving the school to accept a position at the University of Houston, trustees said they'd continue the search a little while longer rather than offer the position to Dr. William W. Chmurny.

The Cheney Blackhawks baseball team earned at least a share of their third straight Frontier League championship with an 8-2 win over Clarkston behind the complete game pitching of Jason Berman. Cheney improved its record to 11-3.

April 24, 1980

Diane Harder, president of the board of directors of the Cheney Community Services Center, announced the kickoff of a fund drive to support a new non-profit corporation that will help turn the Wren Pierson Building into a new community center. Approximately $25,000 in grant money has been received so far.

Cheney Mayor Tom Trulove told the city council that city well No. 5 will be brought back online sometime in June and that there should be no water shortages.

Eastern Washington University announced record enrollment with an all time high of 7,478 students attending spring quarter.

A contract worth $284,136 is about to be awarded to S and F Construction of Spokane to widen SR-902 from the I-90 interchange to Lakeland Village. The improvements will include widening the highway to include 12-foot lanes for traffic and 6-foot shoulders.

According to coach Joe Richer, Cheney High School's girls' track team defeated Pullman “for the first time in years,” edging the Greyhounds 67-65 behind the record-setting performance of the 880-relay team of Jennifer Brasch, Lisa Morrow, Carol Fletcher and Becky Williams. With a time of 1:50.6, the girls beat the old record by a full second.
