    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Dec 31, 2014

It's been a long time coming, and has taken a lot of work, but the Cheney Storm FC U14 girls soccer team has done something no other Storm girls team has done. The Storm U14 are the first Storm team to reach Washington State Premier League status. The team, composed almost entirely of Cheney players ranging from seventh-grade to high school freshmen, defeated a team from Wenatchee in a Dec. 13 promotion relegation game that earned them the right to move up to the Premier...

He defeated Selkirk's Cody Hoffman via a 13-0 major decision in the championship round. Braden Wirth (126) and Kodi Smith (195) both finished third in their weight classes. After a...

  • Big wins mark Eagles' basketball success

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 31, 2014

Waking up on their respective Christmas mornings, both Eastern Washington men’s and women’s basketball coaches — Jim Hayford and Wendy Schuller — may have had some extra gifts for which to be thankful. For Hayford it might have been not having to spend the holiday in a New York City hotel while in the midst of a road trip to Seton Hall and the University of Connecticut, as he was in 2013.. “This year I had a couple of days with my family so it was a lot better,” Hayford sai...

The Eagles host league favorite and defending champion Weber State Thursday, Jan. 1, followed by a visit from Idaho State Saturday, Jan. 3. Both games tipoff at 2:05 p.m. at Reese Court. “We had some big road wins and some games we lost that we would have loved to win,” Eastern head coach Jim Hayford said. “All in all, we’re very proud of having the be...

  • Eastern football has another solid season, playoff run

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 31, 2014

The bar has indeed been set high for the Eastern Washington University’s football team. A national championship will do that. The Eagles’ season ended a couple of games short of their ultimate goal of that trip to Frisco, Texas following a 59-46 loss in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision quarterfinal round Dec. 13 at Roos Field. For the first time in three years, Eastern failed to reach the semifinal round of play, finishing 11-3. They entered the postseason as the...

  • Medical Lake softball returns to state

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 31, 2014

One game Medical Lake couldn’t put the stop to a last-inning rally by their opponent and lost to Seattle Christian 9-8. In the next the Cardinals ran out of runs as a seventh-inning rally fell short, handing Zillah a 6-5 win in the 1A state softball championships in Richland. The losses knocked the Cardinals out of the tournament after just one day, ending their season under rookie head coach Tim Blakely with a 17-10 record. “We battled, that was the biggest thing,” Blake...

  • ML cross country repeats as state 1A champs

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 31, 2014

Even before his team hit the different courses of competition, Medical Lake's veteran cross country coach Gene Blankenship predicted his team would successfully defend its 2013 state 1A cross country title. That turned heads, and apparently got him in a bit of trouble for being so bold. So did the team shirts with the oh so politically incorrect targets on the back. But when you can walk the walk after talking the talk, what can any detractors say? "We're going to repeat as st...
