  • Small victories for Cardinals come amidst wrestling loss to Stags

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 15, 2016

Josh Edmondson is very much happy with the little victories that show up in his wrestling program at Medical Lake in his second season on the job. That helped the 66-12 thumping the Cardinals took last Thursday at the hands of the defending 1A state champions from Deer Park go down just a little easier. The match saw five of the final six bouts decided by forfeit because the Cardinals did not field wrestlers in the heavyweight, 220, 285, 113 and 106 pounds. “I don’t have a 220...

As the Medical Lake girls' basketball team prepares for the part of the season that really counts - the Northeast A League games - the Cardinals seem to be prepared for the grind of the next several weeks. "I'm very happy with this week, I saw lots of good things," head coach Kyle Lundberg said of a 2-1 week. That included a 66-34 nonleague win over Rathdrum, Idaho's Lakeland High School Hawks, another dominant outing in the NEA opener, a 48-28 win at home versus Riverside. It...

The Cheney High wrestling team added several more bright spots to the beginning of their season last week, including a fourth-place finish at the Dec. 10 West Valley Wrestle-Rama dual tournament. The Blackhawks wrestled five dual meets in one day, defeating Lakeside (42-39) and Gonzaga Prep (75-0), tying with Ephrata (42-42) and losing to Idaho's Lake City (51-27) and Timberlake (42-39). "It was good for us to get that much mat time," head coach Brad Rasmussen said. "We had...

  • Blackhawks fall in overtime, 71-68 at West Valley

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Dec 15, 2016

For Cheney head coach Gregg Smith, the reasons for the Blackhawks overtime loss at West Valley last Friday boiled down to one simple fact. “We didn’t take care of business,” Smith said of the 71-68 road setback. The game was Cheney’s to win as much as it was the Eagles’. The Blackhawks had a lead late in the game against West Valley, only to have several costly turnovers allow the Eagles to pull even and force overtime, where they made some big shots to secure the win. One reason Smith pointed to was free throw shooting....

  • Get ready, it's juice box, 'er, college bowl season once again

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Dec 15, 2016

Greetings sports fans. Those of you who know me and remember when I used to write regularly in this column probably know that if it’s December and John’s writing, then it must be that time of year again. Yep — it’s bowl season! This bowl season is particularly interesting because it’s like year three or four of a phenomenon that gets more disappointing every year. By that I mean the selection of teams who have mediocre to losing seasons as participants worthy of playing in the postseason — such as it is for the NCAA’s Foot...

  • Youngstown's 1997 playoff win still pretty fresh for Aaron Best

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 15, 2016

When the Youngstown Penguins last visited this part of the country, Dec. 13, 1997 to face the Eastern Washington Eagles, Cooper Kupp was 4, Gage Gubrud and Samson Ebukam were each 2, the latter likely still in his native Nigeria. One guy who still remembers it all well - the Pens' 25 -14 escape from a cold and snow-covered Joe Albi Stadium in Spokane in a semifinal-round playoff game - is Aaron Best, then an Eagles offensive lineman for head coach Mike Kramer. "The memories fr...

  • Eagles, Penguins in frigid semi-finals

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 15, 2016

It’s Deja vu time again. A battle between Eastern Washington and Youngstown State University on a cold December Saturday and on a likely slippery artificial turf field with a trip to the national title game in Frisco, Texas on the line. Not a lot different in many ways than 19 years ago when the two teams met in Spokane’s Joe Albi Stadium and the Jim Tressel-coached Penguins topped Mike Kramer’s Eagles, 25-14. Different is this game is in Cheney, on red artificial turf, but w...

Using the right measure of the gas pedal and brake has the Medical Lake High School boys' basketball team off to a fast start. The Cardinals wrapped nonleague wins Dec. 6 over Idaho 4A school Lakeland of Rathdrum, 62-40, and 77-56 against 2B Liberty, Saturday, Dec. 10 around a 59-44 win over visiting Riverside in their Northeast A League opener. Updated Dec 15, 2016

1 Years Ago Dec. 14, 2006 Eastern Washington University’s student population passed the 10,000 mark. This made preserving and improving EWU’s facilities one of the biggest challenges for the university. Windsor Elementary School employed help from the Washington National Guard in its annual holiday food drive in partnership with KHQ and Second Harvest Food Bank. EWU dean Judd Case, and his fossil hunting partner James Martin, unveiled a “mini-Nessie” fossil skeleton found in the Antarctica. The duo traveled to Washing...

  • Supporting unions will reinvigorate the middle class

    Updated Dec 15, 2016

Why have many American workers abandoned the Democratic Party? During the last 50 years, Republicans have systematically weakened the unions, historically a Democratic Party base. This has led to members’ distrust of union leadership and of its endorsement of Democratic candidates. Union membership among workers has dwindled from 1-in-3 in 1960 to 1-in-10 today. Yet Democrats have failed to successfully oppose Republicans’ weakening of unions. Additionally, Republican policies promoting extreme wealth inequality have als...
