How the Eagles and the Penguins got here

Eastern routs Richmond at Roos

Registering its first shutout in its last 102 games, third-ranked and No. 2 seeded Eastern Washington rolled past the 12th-ranked University of Richmond Spiders 38-0 in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision Playoffs Dec. 10 at Roos Field.

Eastern’s defense recorded its first shutout since a 16-0 victory over Northern Colorado on Sept. 19, 2009. The 205 yards Richmond had were the fewest EWU has surrendered in its last 28 games.

The Eagles, 12-1 and winners of 11 straight, had just one turnover and forced five.

Senior defensive end Samson Ebukam led the way defensively with eight tackles, a pair of sacks, two other tackles for loss, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and an interception he returned seven yards.

Cooper Kupp finished with six catches for 128 yards and a touchdown, while quarterback Gage Gubrud completed 21-of-32 passes for 287 yards and three touchdowns.

Penguins earn 30-23 double-OT win

Tevin McCaster rushed for a go-ahead touchdown in double-overtime, and the Youngstown State football team battled for a 30-23 win in double overtime over Wofford in the quarterfinals of the 2016 FCS Playoffs in Youngstown, Ohio, Dec. 10.

Senior tailback Jody Webb set a new school record with 331 all-purpose yards, and junior quarterback Hunter Wells passed for three touchdowns as the Penguins won their 16th straight postseason game at Stambaugh Stadium.
