Cheney gymnastics finish fourth in first meet

The Cheney High gymnastics team began their season with a fourth-place finish (122.25 points) at the Dec. 7 Greater Spokane League 3A gymnastics meet. Mead won the event with 167.025 points.

Head coach Jaelyn Gardner said she was proud of her athletes, especially those who were competing in their first high school meet. She noted that some of her athletes had what she referred to as “first meet jitters.”

“We definitely have areas to improve on,” she added.

Top finishers for the Blackhawks include junior Alexis Miller, who took ninth in all-around competition (31.85), tied for 12th in the floor exercise (8.75) and was 12th in the uneven bars (7.10). Her sister, sophomore Makayla Miller, was 15th (28.6) in all around scores while freshman Kyli Mayheu was 17th (27.95) in all around.

Cheney finished the 2016 portion of its schedule with a Dec. 14 Greater Spokane League meet at Ferris against the Saxons, Central Valley, Rogers and Shadle Park.
