  • Little change in Medical Lake budget

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 14, 2014

It’s once again budget season for the city of Medical Lake and the city’s 2015 preliminary numbers show little change. The current expense fund for 2015 is set at $3.2 million, which is approximately $10,000 less than last year. The ending balance for the fund is predicted to be $928,771. The city’s estimated assessed valuation for 2015 is $233.4 million. City Administrator Doug Ross said the budget hasn’t really changed from last year. “When we say nothing has changed, we really mean nothing has changed,” Ross said. “This...

  • Encore performance for Cardinals at State CC

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 14, 2014

The team helped him cover his bet - and more. When Medical Lake cross country coach Gene Blankenship boldly predicted his team would successfully defend their 1A state championship way back in August he took some heat. Then, when his team's T-shirts came out featuring a target on the back, the burner got turned up a little more. But following the Cardinals' dominating performance last Saturday on the 5,000-meter Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco where they improved on their 201...

    LUELLA DOW, Contributor|Updated Nov 13, 2014

St. Joseph’s Indian School in Chamberlain, S.D. thrums and hums with happy talk and laughter as Thanksgiving and Christmas draw closer. Even though these children are far from Cheney, you can sense their enthusiasm as they dream of receiving and giving gifts. In a letter I recently received in the mail, Father J. Anthony Kluckman, SCJ chaplain of the school, gives us a brief picture of Emily, one of the students. “Emily is 8 years old and came to us a year ago,” Kluckman writes. “You could see the hopelessness in her dark br...

  • Increased deer population impacts city

    Updated Nov 13, 2014

Medical Lake, has had a problem concerning the deer population in its city limits for several years. Deer are nonchalantly roaming the city limits, eating all vegetation and, unfortunately, getting hit by drivers commuting in and out of town. The longer this goes on, the more likely that animals that prey on the deer will follow. The last thing we need are bears or cougars making themselves at home, as well. Not only is this problem taking a toll on the city, but it is becoming incredibly dangerous to drive after dark. The...

  • Republicans keep Court decision alive

    Updated Nov 13, 2014

Last September not one Republican senator voted for a constitutional amendment that would overturn the Republican-leaning Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United decision and allow Congress and states to limit the amount and secrecy of money raised and spent in elections. Although a majority of 54 Democratic or Independent senators, against 42 Republican senators, voted to advance the amendment, it failed to garner the two-thirds vote needed to pass the Senate. Prior enactment of such an amendment would have greatly limited t...

  • When elections are about domination, politics is no longer healthy

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Nov 13, 2014

I don’t know about you, but I’ve found elections becoming ever more exhausting with each cycle. The nastiness, the bitterness, the name calling, the subtle and sometimes not so subtle insinuations of dark motive and agenda, the fear mongering, the half-truths and in some cases out right lying about issues and opponents is becoming oppressive and unhealthy. Elections are no longer contests of ideas between parties. They have ceased to be affairs where winners can truthfully say the voters have spoken, and while they have pic...

  • Charitable acts need focus on developing skills, identifying resources

    Updated Nov 13, 2014

Several residents of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., gather in a public park to serve food to some hungry homeless individuals. Would this be considered an act of charity or a crime? Three of those residents — Arnold Abbott, and two south Florida ministers — are being charged with up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine in violation of a recent ordinance, according to the Associated Press article, “Feeding the homeless: Act of charity or a crime?” This Florida ordinance restricts public feeding of homeless people and was put into effect...

  • A season's worth of University of Montana games

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Nov 13, 2014

Because of the success of the Eastern Washington football program over the past several years, for the city of Cheney, every home game weekend in fall is a Grizzly weekend. “EWU football games in the last few years are well attended when any team comes to town,” Cheney’s finance director, Cindy Niemeier, said in an email. “Montana does seem to bring more fans than others, but the stadium still holds the same amount of people.” Niemeier said it’s difficult to nail down economic impacts because the sales tax data the city recei...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 13, 2014

When Audry and Jim Dingfield decided to step into the world of adoption, their mission seemed simple. To give some deserving children from across the globe a fresh start in the land of opportunity. Little did they know that along the way, some of the boys they brought into their lives would pay it back and help put their new hometown in the history books. Just this past Saturday Micah and Jacob Dingfield helped lead Medical Lake's cross country team to its second consecutive 1...

  • The new Missoula Flood

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 13, 2014

Once upon a time the Lake Missoula Floods covered Cheney with water over 100 feet high. Now, every other year, another flood from Missoula covers Cheney, this one with quite a bit of cash. That's when the Montana Grizzlies make their biennial pilgrimage to play football at Roos Field, like they did last Saturday. It's big for the business community in Cheney and it's also huge for Eastern Washington University. While the specifics of the impact of nearly 500 visitors from...
