  • Keeping public safety, safe

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Oct 22, 2015

It's often stated, from Police Chief John Hensley down to officers on the street, that for the Cheney Police Department, no call is too small. For Officer Nate Conley, that might be apprehending a duck that wandered into town several years ago and created traffic problems downtown. Or with Officer Chris Oakes responding to a call about a cat getting stuck in the batting cage nets at Cheney High School's softball field. But then there's the other end of the spectrum - like the...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 22, 2015

The problem sometimes with running a business that is weather dependent is that the knife cuts both ways. The Fairways Golf Course near Four Lakes is a prime example. Blessed with a warmer and drier than usual winter which allowed them to remain open much of the year, the course will experience some growth this season. General manager and head professional, Kris Kallem said the course would finish the season with a slight uptick in business. "(We'll be) up a couple percent in...

  • Looking Back

    Updated Oct 22, 2015

1 Years Ago Oct. 27, 2005 Amy Jo Sooy, seeking a third term as Cheney’s mayor, was set to face off against Allan Gainer in the upcoming general election. After the position was eliminated with the passage of Initiative 695 in 2000, the Medical Lake City Council authorized use of City Assistance Program funding to pay for reinstating a seventh police officer. • Preventing high school football injuries through education

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 22, 2015

Football is a dangerous game — fans and athletes know that. It’s been that way since its inception in 1869. Recently, the sport has been under a microscope due to the number of injuries at the high school level. Even Medical Lake High School had two players who were injured during games. Nationally, six high school players have died due to injuries related to the game. I have heard some friends talk about not letting their sons play football, at least until they are older. Some writers and critics have advocated their sch...

  • Cheney needs more cops on the street

    Updated Oct 22, 2015

Our society has become far too dangerous and complex to rely upon one police officer per shift to sort through the labyrinth of issues that arise each day. Not to mention confronting those citizens that will not cooperate or those that must be taken into custody for breaking the law. In the city of Cheney police officers routinely work alone and this practice is no longer acceptable. Moreover, there are times when a Cheney police officer has multiple calls to respond to at the same time. How then can one or even two officers...

  • Approving Proposition 1 will help keep the public safe

    Updated Oct 22, 2015

We generally don’t give public safety much thought, until we need it. Public safety is nothing that should be taken for granted. Its quality and quantity can determine whether you are safe or at risk, whether you live or you die. But it is something that must be paid for, and that is why we are encouraging Cheney voters to say yes on the city’s Proposition 1. Proposition 1, would, if passed, increase the property tax levy by 70 cents from its current $2.40 per $1,000 of assessed value to $3.10 per $1,000 of assessed val...

  • Bill Jarms is still pumping out the work

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 22, 2015

Nothing like getting tossed into the water to see if you can swim. That might have been how Bill Jarms felt the day he learned his dad, Ron, was not coming back from vacation. All of a sudden the pump business that was carved from the family's hardware store was all Bill's responsibility. Ron Jarms ran the pump business from 1972-1991, Bill Jarms said. It was more out of necessity than want. After a career in retail, Ron Jarms moved from Iowa to Cheney in 1972 when he bought...

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 22, 2015

The Cheney School Board District Director 4 election is the only position to come down to one candidate: Stacy Nicol. Current board director Rick Mount originally filed for reelection but withdrew his name in May. In an earlier interview with the Cheney Free Press, Mount, who’s been a board member for 16 years, stated several reasons why he withdrew and thought it was “time for some new blood” on the board. Nicol grew up in Cheney and attended Betz Elementary, as well as junior high and high school in Cheney. After gradu...

All five action items before the council involved issues falling under the scope of Public Works Director Todd Ableman — ranging from recycling to roadwork to water of different sources. At its regular monthly meeting last Wednesday, Oct. 14, the Airway Heights Planning Commission unanimously approved moving a rezone request to the city’s comprehensive plan docket for consideration. Under state law the city can only amend the plan once a year, and can do so at the request of the city or of a private citizen.
