  • Cardinal track competitors showing progress with recent PR efforts

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter They may not have scored points last Saturday at the Mooberry Relays at Whitworth University, but the Medical Lake track team keeps taking steps that will likely allow them to in the future. The team collected a handful of personal records at the event, which attracted area schools and was won by Mead on a cool, windy and sometimes rainy day. Emily Pake may have had the best day for Cardinal competitors as the junior recorded a 90-foot-6-inch throw in the javelin, a 103-foot fling of the discus... Full story

  • Jason Crawford Memorial Tournament is big hit for Cheney, EWU

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter They may be in large part some little guys, but those who came to wrestle last weekend in Cheney at the 22nd annual Jason Crawford Memorial tournament are hoping to rekindle something big for the community. Organizer, Wayne Terry of Medical Lake said slightly over 1,200 wrestlers from kindergarten through eighth grade descended on Eastern Washington University's Reese Court last Saturday, accompanied by parents, relatives and siblings. Their vehicles and RVs packed parking lots and lined...

  • Injury to Edge cuts Eastern's first scrimmage short last Saturday

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter The good news was Eastern Washington University's football team got a break last Saturday when coach Beau Baldwin called an early halt to the first scrimmage of spring football. The bad came when it learned the break safety Will Edge suffered to his fibula was the reason Baldwin called an early halt – some 25 plays short of what he planned – to the first of two planned scrimmages. Edge, who lettered the past two seasons as a backup at free safety and strong safety, had surgery on Sunday. Bal... Full story

  • Cardinals challenged by youth, numbers

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter A combination of low numbers, little time on the field and inexperience has taken its toll on Medical Lake's baseball team early in the Great Northern League season. And that may have never been more evident than last week when the Cardinals suffered three one-sided defeats to teams representing the other end of the baseball spectrum. It all began with a 14-2 non-league loss to Cheney and concluded by getting stung by West Valley in GNL games by 14-1 and 11-1 scores. “We're basically playing 11...

  • Lady Cards' coach still finding positives despite winless start

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter Despite an 0-4 start in Great Northern League play, and an 0-6 overall record, Medical Lake softball coach Gai Daily is still able to find some positives out of the early season. Over the course of four days last week, the Lady Cardinals dropped a pair of games to Deer Park, 10-9 and 18-0 this past Wednesday in a rain-delay make-up and then 3-0 and 9-4 to West Valley on Saturday. The road does not get any easier, however, for the Lady Cards who head to Colville this Saturday to meet the...

  • ML finds Clarkston is still GNL's top dog

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter There were a number of things Medical Lake girls' tennis coach Dawn Eliassen learned last week as her team earned a split in a pair of Great Northern League matches. The biggest lesson, perhaps, was that there's still a lot of room between defending GNL and district champion Clarkston, and the wannabes in the rest of the league. Medical Lake lost 7-0 to the Lady Bantams last Tuesday but rebounded to defeat Deer Park 6-1 Thursday at home. “I kind of blocked that one out,” Eliassen said of the...

  • Medical Lake boys earn split in GNL play

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter Just as their counterpart on the girls' team found, the Medical Lake boys' tennis team learned that Clarkston still reigns supreme in Great Northern League tennis circles. That lesson was made known last Tuesday when the Cardinals dropped a 7-0 decision to the defending GNL and district champion Bantams, who scored a lop-sided win last Tuesday on the road. Medical Lake evened its record for the week, and in the Great Northern League, with a 7-0 romp at Deer Park. Two-set victories were the norm...

  • Blackhawk boys have no trouble with Deer Park and Riverside in GNL tennis

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor To say the Cheney boys tennis team had a good week last week might be something of an understatement. The Blackhawks lost just one match in knocking off both Deer Park and Riverside to run their Great Northern League mark to 3-0. The Hawks had no trouble last Tuesday downing the Stags, 7-0, and kept up their momentum with a 6-1 win against the Rams, Thursday. David Denenny coupled consistent groundstrokes with a new serve to knock off Jason Henning in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 1 singles while...

  • Cheney girls' tennis opens league play with pair of wins

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor The Cheney girls' tennis team opened its Great Northern League schedule with a pair of wins last week, knocking off both Deer Park and Riverside by identical 5-2 scores. Senior Missy Gill got things going for the Blackhawks on the road against the Stags, downing Sami Gatts in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0, for a win at No. 1 singles. Michelle Passey couldn't find a way to get past Kayla Moorman at No. 2, losing 6-2, 5-3, while Caitlin Miller struggled against Sam Petrina at No. 3, losing 6-2, 6-0. Alyssa... Full story

  • Lady Hawks drop three, including GNL doubleheader at Colville

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor The luster seems to have been rubbed off the Cheney softball team's defense. The Lady Hawks committed one error in their first 20 innings of play this season, but since that time has given up 17 miscues in their last 33 – five games resulting in five losses. Cheney saw its overall record fall to 1-6 with three losses last week, an 11-5 setback in non-league action against 1A Lakeside on Wednesday, and a doubleheader loss to league-leading Colville on Saturday in Great Northern League play. Through it a... Full story

  • Watch where you park Cheney baseball fans, or risk some bad mojo

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor I'm a little slow at times. For instance, it wasn't too long ago that I came to understand that you don't pronounce the ‘t' in potpourri. Or that the word means a mixture of nice smelling flowers, herbs and spices kept in a jar, or a miscellaneous collection of things, and not something completely and entirely unrelated – and maybe not smelling as sweet. But I've learned, and so this week's column is my one chance to use the French word (said with a nose held slightly up) in print. It's time for Crunch...

  • Blackhawks place sixth at Mooberry Relays

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor Cheney's boys' and girls' track teams took part in last Saturday's Mooberry Relays, hosted by Rogers High School and held at Whitworth University's track, with both squads managing top-10 finishes despite cool and sometimes sloppy weather. The Blackhawks' boys took sixth out of 20 teams with a score of 60 points, well back of meet champion Mead with 192, but 12 ahead of fellow Great Northern League opponent West Valley. The Hawks' girls also finished sixth out of 22 teams with 44.5 points, while the...

  • Blackhawks down Colville, Clarkston to stay atop GNL soccer

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor The Cheney boys soccer team used solid defense and a mild offensive breakthrough to notch two more Great Northern League wins last week, keeping their league mark perfect heading towards round two of play. The Blackhawks did something last Tuesday at home against Colville (0-6, 0-6) that they had struggled with through the first five games this season – finish offensively. Cheney had a season-high 19 shots on goal; with four finding the back of the net in the 4-0 win over the Indians. Bryce P... Full story

  • Blackhawks extend diamond-winning streak to four

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor There's a baseball axiom that good pitching can often carry a team during times of poor hitting. So what happens when you're getting good pitching and hitting? Cheney High School baseball players, coaches and fans will tell you that equals a winning streak – which is what the Blackhawks have produced the past several weeks. Cheney has rattled off five wins in a row since a 5-2 loss in the first game of a doubleheader two Saturdays ago in Clarkston. That streak includes four wins last week, two in f...

  • Cheney finances and summer projects off to a good start for 2009

By DAVID TELLER Staff Reporter Even though the country is in a financial crisis and the city suffered damaged from last winter's snowstorms, all is well according to Cheney Mayor Allan Gainer. In a town hall meeting on April 9 that was held in the Cheney City Council chambers, Gainer reassured citizens that, after a recent budget meeting, the city is in good condition. “We're doing just fine,” Gainer said. He added that the city is looking forward to some economic stimulus and federal grant funding and that he is proud of...

  • Warmer, drier days are ahead, but not until (maybe) May

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter When it comes to what to expect with this spring's weather, there's a familiar ring to the prediction Eastern Washington University meteorology professor Bob Quinn offers. April showers should bring May flowers. And some of those showers could still produce enough snow to further add to this season's all-time record, perhaps pushing totals to the 100-inch mark for the first time since records began back in the late 1800s. Quinn has resided in EWU's geography department for more than 40 years...

  • Warm feet because of donations, warm hearts

I wish to express my extreme gratitude to all of you that gave donations of socks thru the Cheney Dollar Tree Store in March. We raised $815, used to purchase 1,826 items. People donated 1,781 socks of various sizes, along with gloves, hats, scarves and even a shirt. It was through the giving attitude of people in the Cheney, Medical Lake and Airway Heights area that made nearly 2,000 pair of socks available during the month of March to school children in your neighborhood. I would like to thank the Cheney Dollar Tree Store f...

  • Thanks to city street crews after our winter

After a winter of record snowfall, spring has finally sprung in Cheney. We have seen two certain indicators of spring's onset at our house: Robins scratching in our yard and the Cheney Public Works street sweeper cleaning the winter dregs from the streets by our house. Both are welcome sights! We enjoy living in the Pacific Northwest, but more specifically in Cheney. In Cheney we are blessed to have conscientious city workers in the Street Department, the Police Department and the Fire Department. When our town was in a...

  • Healthcare cost should not exceed taxes

Yesterday, I submitted my federal income taxes mindful of the push back day in Cheney and other places around the nation. I decided to see if my income taxes are unfair and extremely onerous. Reviewing my 1040 form, I have reached the conclusion my taxes are not so bad. I did pay 12.55 percent of my income to the federal government for all the protections they provide me. The real shocker came when I examined Schedule A, Form 1040, I discovered I paid 13.1 percent of my income for healthcare. Now I am angry. Paying more for...

  • Anti-smoking ad's message lost amid broadcast media sensationalism

Nothing seems to spark more controversy than a cute kid crying alligator tears, like the ones by little Alex from Australia. Alex is the 4-year old actor who stars in a controversial anti-smoking ad the New York City Department of Health premiered a few weeks back as part of a campaign to help nicotine addicts kick their nasty habit. NYC's campaign appears two-fold, because it comes on the heels of several states introducing new federal taxes raising the price of cigarettes in hopes of hitting smokers in two places where it...

  • State should keep higher ed affordable

Lawmakers are in talks to let Washington universities and community colleges raise their annual tuition up to 28 percent over the next biennium to help offset between $513 million to 683 million in proposed budget cuts from the House and Senate. Following requests by the state's Higher Education Coalition Board, Gov. Christine Gregoire endorsed a proposal this month that would allow institutions to raise tuition higher than the 7 percent statutory lid, up to 14 percent by four-year schools, and 7 percent for community...

  • Medical Lake student named national winner of VFW essay contest and scholarship

By CARA LORELLO Staff Reporter Medical Lake High School senior Natale Szabo made state history this month when her award-winning audio essay for the Washington State Veterans of Foreign Wars Voices of Democracy contest became the national VFW contest winner for 2009. Szabo's essay was picked from 54 entries written by high school students from both the U.S., and American military bases around the world. The announcement was made at an April ceremony in Washington, D.C., which Szabo attended as the state's official winner... Full story

  • Grant adds a flare of fun into physical education at CMS

By DAVID TELLER Staff Reporter Physical education classes at Cheney Middle School have a new look, including music and costumes after the school received a $500 grant from the Kids in Need Foundation. CMS physical education teacher Selinda Riggs used the funding to improve morale and participation in Content-Based Performance Assessments (CBPA), which are a self-assessment system she has the students doing. “Self assessment is something they'll be doing the rest of their lives,” Riggs said referring to the students' fut... Full story
