Cardinal track competitors showing progress with recent PR efforts

They may not have scored points last Saturday at the Mooberry Relays at Whitworth University, but the Medical Lake track team keeps taking steps that will likely allow them to in the future.

The team collected a handful of personal records at the event, which attracted area schools and was won by Mead on a cool, windy and sometimes rainy day.

Emily Pake may have had the best day for Cardinal competitors as the junior recorded a 90-foot-6-inch throw in the javelin, a 103-foot fling of the discus and 32-11 in the shot-put. Plus she got to do a new event, the hammer-throw.

Coach Phil Tennison said he did a “crash course” in the hammer throw during practice last week, hoping that nothing would go hurtling in the wrong direction. “All they had to do was make sure they knew how it rotated around and release it between the boundaries,” Tennison said.

“They were pretty nervous at first but they went and did it and said, ‘ooh, we like this,'” Tennison reported. Matt Mellott tossed his hammer 64-10, while Pake went 53-0 1/2.

Akira Payton did well in the high jump, topping 5-feet-9-inches, this coming after he slipped earlier. Tennison thinks the senior, who excelled in football, but is trying track for the first time, “He went 5-2 or 5-4 the last meet,” Tennison said, so he's showing the improvement. “Since this is his first year with track, there's a lot to learn,” his coach said.

The 4x200 team of Timmy Haynes, Tony Cameron, Jarrod Swanson and Kevin Ramson did well, Tennison said, clocking a 1-minute, 40.30-second time, good for 12th in the 17-school event that was run in nasty weather according to the coach.

David Hall clocked a 20.84 time in the 100 high-hurdles. Clay Watters ran the 300 meter intermediate hurdles in 49.54, while Lacy Nelson clocked a 6:35 time in the 1,600 meters.

Other PR's in field events included Bryce Dressler, who heaved the shot-put 31-feet-03.5-inches and Tyler Parzuchowski who had a 75-0 throw in the javelin. Sarah Vincent had a 12-2 1/2 in the long jump and added a throw of 59-5 in the discus.

Tennison said the Mooberry is a fun event because there is a different order of events. “The kids enjoyed themselves, except for the nasty weather,” Tennison said.

The Ritzville Invite will take over the Medical Lake track with a number of Cardinals in line to compete and improve before the Great Northern League season begins next Thursday at Cheney (3:30 p.m.).

However, Tennison said, seven will travel to Pasco on Saturday for that school's invitational.

Senior Marissa Propeck will go and compete in the high jump, the 200 and 400 meter. Pake will go to toss the shot and the discus.

Swanson will go in both the 200 and 400 relays with Haynes, Ramson, Costic and Christian Bowman in the 4x100 and 4x400.

Weather once again has been providing setbacks for his team, Tennison noted. They have practiced in one type of condition, but competed in another – generally wet and windy so far. “The weather is supposed to get warmer.”
