  • Medical Lake baseball fate sealed

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 7, 2018

Call them gutsy performances by certain individuals, but still losses nonetheless. Medical Lake lost a pair of Northeast A League baseball games 4-1 at Lakeside on April 24 and 16-0 to Deer Park April 27. The setbacks added more reality to the Cardinals days ahead that it’s time to at least begin thinking about the idea there will be no postseason for first-year head coach Austin Sharp. Weston Thomas pitched against Lakeside. “He just does not disappoint,” Sharp said. He ga...

    Paul Delaney|Updated May 3, 2018

Team White's Zach Eagle got his team's first score, plus enough receiving and return yardage and was awarded the Iron Eagle award. Team White had a pair of interceptions to blunt Team Red drives and preserve the shutout in the game that concludes spring football practice at Eastern... Full story

The last time that the Cheney High’s boys tennis team faced Pullman, they fell 7-0. But during the rematch on April 24, the Blackhawks picked up two games against the Greyhounds and lost 5-2. “It was a lot closer than the first time,” head coach Jesse Erickson said. “Overall I felt really good about our performance.” Picking up one of the wins against Pullman was Hunter Pohl at No. 3 singles, losing 2-6 in the first set, but staging a comeback by winning the second 7-6 (7-5) and the ultimate tiebreaker 13-11. “Hunter h...

Medical Lake made it two shutouts over Colville in as many games this season and in the process the Cardinals will enter the Northeast A League soccer playoffs as the No. 2 seed and a bye in round one. “It was nice to get the bye in the first round of playoffs,” head coach Zane Higgins said. Nick Rosenbeck scored twice in Medical Lake’s 2-0 win April 26 in Colville, breaking the tie between the two teams on the final game of the regular season. Medical Lake won earlier 3-0....

  • Medical Lake track picks up the pace when it counts

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 3, 2018

After a slow start, Medical Lake’s track team might just be peaking at the right time. Or so the results from last week seem to indicate with certain athletes emerging from the pack. In their Northeast A League meet on April 25 at Colville that also included Chewelah, Medical Lake lost to the hosts in both the boys (86-57) and girls (79-66) competition. ML’s boys earned an 82-37 win over Chewelah and the girls prevailed 82-50. But it was over the weekend where head coach Gen...

  • Sweep of Pullman keeps Lady Blackhawks atop GNL

    John McCallum, Managing Editor|Updated May 3, 2018

For a brief moment, the Cheney High softball team lost it's hitting ability, despite a 5-2 road win at Clarkston on April 24. No worries, however. They found it four days later against Pullman, pummeling the hapless Greyhounds 19-0 and 20-7 in a home doubleheader sweep. It's not as if Cheney couldn't hit at Clarkston, they managed 10 base knocks overall. But while some teams would be happy with that, the Lady Blackhawks are used to more, and for head coach Gary Blake, it's a...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 3, 2018

For four years as a Medical Lake Cardinal, Cory Wagner did it all. He quarterbacked the football team in fall, was a basketball point guard during winter, then pitched and batted for the baseball team. After graduation, he fine-tuned his game as a member of the Spokane Cannons AAA American Legion baseball team, helping guide them to state in 2016. That work has paid off, with Wagner, a sophomore, earning not only a spot on the pitching-rich roster for the Community Colleges...

  • Hickey seems ready for the challenge

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 3, 2018

The last time Eastern Washington University had to fill the athletics director’s chair was over 10 years ago. And at the time, it was no question that there was very little stability. Former AD Bill Chaves, who left Cheney in January to take a similar duty station at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, liked to remind people that when he was tired he was the fifth person – be it full-time or as an interim – to sit in the chair in just a few years. But a decad...

Cheney High's baseball team came close to repeating last year's regular season finish over the final four games of 2018. Needing to win their final six games to have a shot at emerging at season's end as Great Northern League champions, the Blackhawks won five of those final six, three of four in two doubleheaders last week, to jump into second place. With a little help, Cheney - which has wrapped up its regular season schedule - could remain there, and at worst finish no...
