Cardinal soccer claims second place

Medical Lake made it two shutouts over Colville in as many games this season and in the process the Cardinals will enter the Northeast A League soccer playoffs as the No. 2 seed and a bye in round one.

“It was nice to get the bye in the first round of playoffs,” head coach Zane Higgins said.

Nick Rosenbeck scored twice in Medical Lake’s 2-0 win April 26 in Colville, breaking the tie between the two teams on the final game of the regular season. Medical Lake won earlier 3-0.

Medical Lake (8-3 NEA, 8-6 overall) will host the winner of a loser-out contest between Colville (8-4, 9-6) and Riverside (3-9, 3-10) today, May 3 at 4 p.m. at Shepard Field in a loser-out game.

Rosenbeck scored in the 28th minute and again in the 66th minute. Taye Jones had a busy day in the net with 12 saves as the Indians outshot the Cardinals 12-5.

Earlier in the week, Medical Lake breezed past Riverside 7-1 on April 23 in Senior Night. The game, played under the lights at Holliday Field, saw Carter Pivonka score four times with brother James dishing out assists on three of those goals. Rosenbeck had a pair of scores.

With a win May 3, Medical Lake would move into double-elimination play against the winner of regular season champ, Lakeside (12-0, 14-1) who play either No. 5 Deer Park (4-8, 4-9) or Newport (5-7, 6-7).

“Some of the other teams are improving quickly and might be dangerous to play,” Higgins said. “We can use the rest also.”
