At that time state law did not authorize a high school curriculum. We know of at least one student who completed Mr. Sutton’s course and went on to pass the entrance exam for the University of California. • Medical Lake comes out flat at St. Maries in 29-18 loss

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 18, 2014

Lost somewhere in the 76-mile journey between Medical Lake and St. Maries, Idaho are the legs and energy that propelled the Cardinals to a pleasing opening week victory over Orofino. By the time Medical Lake head football coach Wes Hobbs saw what was missing last Friday it was too late and the Cardinals (1-1) were handed a 29-18 loss by the Lumberjacks (2-1). “We were flat, really flat,” Hobbs said. “We just didn’t play with a lot of emotion.” The Cardinals opened the season S...

The Cheney girls’ swimming team delved right into the water at a jamboree Saturday, Sept. 13 in Ephrata, Wash., against nine other teams. Sophomore McKenzie Norman had a great start to her season, placing first in the 100-yard freestyle in 56.86 seconds. She also placed in the top five of the 100-yard backstroke, where she finished in 1 minute and 5.52 seconds. Not only does Norman qualify for state in both events, but she also broke the current Cheney High School record for the 100-yard backstroke. “She was close last yea...

  • Lady Blackhawks play with intensity in losses

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Sep 18, 2014

While the scores and outcomes might not show it, Cheney High School girls soccer head coach Nels Radtke feels good about his team overall, and is particularly impressed with the Lady Blackhawks intensity and physicality. Cheney initiated the contact and defined the pace of play in home games last week against East Valley and University. The Lady Hawks came up on the short end of the scores, however, falling 5-1 to the Knights in the Great Northern League opener for both schools and 6-1 Saturday to University of the 4A...

  • Volleyball falls to East Valley in home opener

The Cheney High volleyball team opened their season this week with a loss to East Valley 3-0 in their first league match of the season, Sept. 11, then traveled to Northern Idaho to compete in the Lakeland Invite. Last year the Blackhawks went 1-1 against East Valley. The Lady Knights came into this match with some action under their belts. They competed in an invitational tournament, Sept. 5, at Central Valley High School, then lost to University. Cheney began the first set with an ace from Kimber Case, her first of three...

  • URC ice melts out from under Cheney's new hockey team

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 18, 2014

Cheney's new hockey team, the Ice Hawks, made their home debut last Friday night. It was a preseason game that ended in disappointing fashion in a 4-3 double-overtime loss to the Tri-City Outlaws. You didn't hear much if anything about it because the game was played in Coeur d'Alene. It's a curious road the Ice Hawks have traveled since it was announced May 22 that, "Cheney Becomes Eigth Team in NPHL." Perhaps the typo in the headline was a precursor to the troubles this Tier...

  • Blackhawks shut out Deer Park for first gridiron win

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Sep 18, 2014

Right now, defense is the key to success for the Cheney High School football team. The Blackhawks stymied the Stags’ running game and harried quarterback Nic Clough enough that the senior threw six interceptions in Cheney’s 14-0 non-league win last Friday at Deer Park. “From a defensive standpoint we were flying around and hitting guys well, tackling well and being disciplined,” head coach Bobby Byrd said Sunday night. Cheney’s experienced secondary frustrated Clough all night, getting a pair of interceptions from Cruz Galm...

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Sep 18, 2014

On a day perfectly made for running, Cheney High School's cross country team ran almost perfectly in their first meet of the season. The Blackhawks brought home three top-10 team finishes among the seven races at last Saturday's 43-team Highlander Invitational on a sun-drenched course at Shadle Park High School. The Cheney senior boys ran to a fifth-place finish, while the varsity girls and sophomore boys earned sixth-place finishes. Head coach Jay Martin said compared with...

  • Medical Lake runners rule day at Super One

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 18, 2014

Medical Lake's runners have done a good job so far of backing up their coach's boastful predictions. The latest example came last Saturday when the Cardinals won the small school division and finished just three points behind Coeur d'Alene, 36-33 in the overall standings of the Coeur d'Alene Super One Invitational at Hayden Lake. Medical Lake took three of the top four spots in the small school division, but had three of the overall top six placings with a first, third and...
