    PAUL DELANEY|Updated Sep 13, 2018

Led by quarterback Gage Gubrud who was making his first start, the Eagles stunned the Cougars 45-42 back on Sept. 3, 2016 at Martin Stadium. The Eagles and Cougars meet Sept. 15 in a rematch. This is only the fifth game in a series that began over a century ago and heavily favored Washington State College in its infancy where they won 46-0 in 1907 and 73-0 a year later. The series went dormant until 2012 when Wazzu had to have a stout defensive stand to escape with a 24-20... Full story

  • Cards volleyball finishes week strong

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 13, 2018

Nothing like testing one’s self right at the start. That’s what the Medical Lake volleyball team did last week as they jumped into the deep end of the Northeast A League pool and faced perennial power Lakeside in Suncrest, losing in straight sets 25-8, 25-8, 25-12. “For our first league meeting we played one of the toughest teams in the league,” head coach Todd Harr wrote in an email. “The team played solid despite what the scores may dictate, we were out-sized and our offen...

  • Medical Lake falls late at Okanogan

    Updated Sep 13, 2018

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter The football competition seems to be getting tougher, yet the Medical Lake Cardinals have shown they can hold their own. Their losing streak now dates back to the beginning of the 2016 season and sits at 20 games following a 27-7 nonleague loss at defending Caribou Trail champion Okanogan last Friday. But consider that the Cardinals (0-2) played the Bulldogs (2-0) nose-to-nose into the fourth quarter until they “shot themselves in the foot” with penalties, according to head coach Jeremy Bah...

  • Medical Lake has impressive Highlander Invite finishes

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 13, 2018

Medical Lake's defending 1A boys cross country state champions got a preliminary glimpse at the Highlander Invitational last Saturday of how things might look as they seek to add another trophy to the case in November. Head coach Gene Blankenship likes what he sees so far, albeit too early to have a firm idea. "I thought the kids ran pretty well," Blankenship said. "Right now it looks like we might be a little stronger than Lakeside or Riverside." In an event that drew dozens...

  • Blackhawks smash East Valley, come up short against other rivals

    SHANNEN TALBOT, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 13, 2018

East Valley showed off an impressive repertoire of tricks and fancy footwork in the Sept. 6 game against Cheney, but it was no match for the Blackhawks' rock-solid defense, allowing the Blackhawks to triumph 5-0 in their first home game of the season under the lights. The girls varsity soccer team started strong with a goal early in the fourth minute and didn't let up, beating East Valley for the first time in four years. The team's defense has only allowed 11 shots on goal...

  • Blackhawks runners split up for first CC competition

    Updated Sep 13, 2018

By JOHN McCALLUM Managing Editor Cheney High’s boys and girls cross country squads made their 2018 debuts last Saturday — albeit in different locations about 105 miles apart. The Blackhawk girls had the farthest to travel, competing in the Moses Lake Invitational at Blue Heron Park in a format that was more traditional to what both teams will be seeing over the course of the season. The two high school races were each 5,000 meters, with varsity and junior varsity teams competing. Cheney’s varsity girls placed fourth overa...

  • It never gets old watching Kupp on the field

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 13, 2018

Finally, I had a reason to tune into Monday Night Football and it was nothing more complex than the opportunity to watch Cooper Kupp on one side and John Gruden on the other. Kupp’s Rams prevailed over Gruden’s Raiders 33-13 in the much-ballyhooed return of “Chucky” to Oakland as head coach. Gruden was on the sidelines of the team for the first time since his departure to Tampa Bay in 2002. Somehow a 10-year, $100-million salary was sufficient to lure the 55-year-old stoic G...

  • Blackhawks down Rogers for special win

    John McCallum, Managing Editor|Updated Sep 13, 2018

Cheney High football fans at Albi Stadium last Thursday got a taste of the true power of special teams to make an impact in a football game. After fumbles created some early adversity for the Blackhawks against Rogers High School, it was a pair of special teams plays that turned a close game with the host Pirates into a rout. Up 10-7 at the half, Cheney sophomore Dusten Butikofer fielded the second-half kickoff at his 8-yardline and sprinted 92 yards for a score. Not long after, senior Camden VerStrate turned a Rogers’ p...

Houseplants make a wonderful addition to our home's décor and improve the indoor air quality. Those with pets however may struggle with keeping plants safe from curious pets and the pets safe from indoor greenery. The good news is you can grow an indoor garden even when you own pets. Yes, some do love to dig in the soil or even eat our favorite houseplants, but with proper plant selection and planning you can keep your pets safe while enjoying an indoor garden. Start by...
