  • Cardinal boys tennis finally face opponent

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 24, 2017

It took three tries, but Medical Lake's boys' tennis team finally got to face an opponent on the court. While the result, a 4-1 nonleague loss to Cheney, was maybe not what co-head coach Jake Wesselman had in mind, just being able to compete was rewarding. "This was our first match of the season and our third time out on the courts due to weather constraints," Wesselman said. "Overall, we struggled in some areas of our game, but with limited court time, we weren't really...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 23, 2017

Does revenge really taste sweet, or does it have any flavor at all? All Medical Lake boys’ head soccer coach Zane Higgins knows is it feels good because his Cardinals opened the season not only with a victory, but a big win to boot, 3-2 over Mt. Spokane of the Greater Spokane League March 17. The victory earned Medical Lake a 1-1 record last week as they followed with a 2-0 loss to another GSL team, North Central. “It was a good result considering they beat us last year, 6-1...

  • Cards pound Gorillas in softball

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 23, 2017

Hailey Hostetter had a 4-for-4 day at the plate with four RBIs, and Hannah Petek stroked a grand slam home run in the second inning on Medical Lake’s 21-6 season-opening nonleague softball victory over visiting Davenport, March 17. Among Hostetter’s hits were a pair of doubles. Petek’s homer was part of a 12-run second inning in a game that went just three innings due to the “mercy rule.” Other big bats for the Cardinals were Sarah Mayer who was 3-for-4 with a double an...

The Blackhawks took an early lead with four runs in the first inning, then added a run in the third before Sunnyside answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Head coach Glenn Chamberlain said his players were aggressive in the beginning of the game, implementing “small ball” and getting runners on base. “But after we were up 5-0, we didn’t do a whole lot,” Chamberlain said. “What we’re trying to do (as coa...

  • Strong junior class propels Blackhawk boys track and field

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Mar 23, 2017

With 72 athletes turning out, the Cheney High School boys track and field team might be approaching an all-time school record for roster size. And while that might bode well for the future, it’s a specific class that has head coach Derek Slaughter thinking the future might not be too far off. “We are junior heavy,” Slaughter said. “We also have a lot of freshmen, but that junior class stuck around.” Those juniors played a big part in the Blackhawks fourth-place finish at their first meet of the season, last Saturday...

Six years ago next week, March 29 to be exact, the newly announced Eastern Washington University head basketball coach, Jim Hayford, took to the podium at the Spokane Club to address the gathering. One doesn’t go into coaching without some trepidation as to what lies ahead in the road. But when he was elevated from a Division III job at Whitworth to the D-I role with the Eagles, there had not been a lot of success for those making the sizeable leap. But as he looked back at t...

Felix Von Hofe had 17 points, 15 on 3-point shots in his final game as an Eagle. But it was the Cowboys who were really dialed in from long-range. Wyoming sank 11 of 18 3-pointers for 61.1 percent. They also went 58.3 percent from the field, going 35-of-60....

  • Numbers give Blackhawk girls track and field options

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Mar 23, 2017

For their first meet of the season, the Cheney High School girls track and field team didn’t do too bad, considering conditions last Saturday for the Howard Dolphin/West Valley Invitational were way less than ideal and a number of athletes were missing due to other obligations. The Blackhawks ran, jumped and threw themselves to 98 points in the 14-team meet, a total bettered only by meet champion Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls). In a little bit of a shift from past meets, Cheney’s biggest scoring came not from track but in the...

  • Looking Back

    Updated Mar 23, 2017

1 Years Ago March 22, 2007 After less than seven months on the job, Dr. Darren Hamilton was dismissed as the Eastern Washington University's athletics director. Spokane County commissioners closed a zoning loophole that would allow for building near Spokane International Airport and Fairchild Air Force Base. The move kept development from occurring in the "crash zones" around both airfields. Sophomore pitcher Liz Shoben allowed just six hits in Medical Lake's 20-1 rout over...
