  • Council hears pair of zoning ordinances

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Feb 5, 2015

Ordinances played a leading role on the Cheney City Council’s Jan. 27 meeting agenda. The council conducted public hearings on an ordinance inserting language changes into the city’s municipal code chapter on Zoning, and on a second dealing with overlay zones. Public Works Director Todd Ableman highlighted changes in several sections of the zoning chapter, Chapter 21. The first change allows manufacturing/production as a limited “ancillary” use to take place when in conjunction with retail or restaurant/food service in the...

  • Super Bowl can be a rookie or a dark horse's time to shine

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Feb 5, 2015

There are numerous things to discuss relating to Super Bowl XLIX where the New England Patriots defeated the defending world champions Seattle Seahawks 28-24. We could go into detail about the infamous call that Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll made in the fourth quarter. You know, the one where his team was within one yard of scoring. Instead of having running back Marshawn Lynch run the ball into the end zone Carroll called for quarterback Russell Wilson to throw a pass — a pass intended for receiver Ricardo Lockette but w...

  • Cardinals in three-way NEA tie

The Medical Lake boys' basketball team is advancing towards one goal that they hope allows them to realize the other of a return to, and run in the postseason. Following road wins in their two Northeast A League games last week, 63-43 at Deer Park and 80-55 at Colville, the Cardinals have now won five straight games. They improved to 9-2 in league play, 13-4 overall. With a Riverside loss, 66-50 at home Jan. 30 to Lakeside, there is now in a three-way tie for the league lead...

  • Deliverance

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Feb 5, 2015

It may not have been a win of biblical proportions, but a guy named Jacob helped deliver the Cheney High boys basketball team its first victory of 2015. Senior forward Jacob Whiteley scored a season and career high 16 points to help lead the Blackhawks to a 40-35 road win over East Valley last Friday night. He had some help as fellow senior JT Gould added 13 points to send Cheney to its first Great Northern League victory since a 66-62 win over Deer Park Jan. 21, 2014, snapping a 15-game losing streak spanning two seasons....

  • Eagles come alive late, top Vandals in OT

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Feb 5, 2015

In a game of crazy back and forth runs, Eastern Washington had the one that counted the most against the University of Idaho last Saturday at Reese Court. Eastern trailed by 11 points with just 1 minute, 33 seconds to play in regulation. But from there the Eagles outscored the Vandals 16-5, the final points a rim-circling layup from Drew Brandon that tied the game at 86-86 as the horn sounded. That forced overtime where the Eagles emerged after five additional minutes with a...

  • The Top Shelf seeks to grow local recreational marijuana business

    Updated Feb 5, 2015

By AL STOVER Staff Reporter When customers walk into a recreational marijuana store for the first time, they might expect to walk into a smoke-filled room with no windows, Bob Marley posters hanging on the walls and a Cheech and Chong movie playing on a small television in the back. Customers who walk into the The Top Shelf, will show the security guard their ID, go through the door and enter a clean room where merchandise is displayed in jewelry cases and on shelves. "I wante...

  • Looking Back

    Updated Feb 5, 2015

1 Years Ago Feb. 10, 2005 Security issues forced Eastern Washington University to cancel an appearance and speaking engagement by controversial University of Colorado professor, Ward Churchill. The university, however, refused to cancel an appearance by porn star Ron Jeremy. Improvements and additions to Medical Lake Middle School, plus a new elementary school in the Fox Hollow housing development, were both part of a proposed 2005 bond issue approved by the school board in...

  • Everybody cares when there's music playing

    LUELLA DOW, Contributor|Updated Feb 5, 2015

Nobody cares when Joey drops the bat and the ball rolls across his toes onto third base. Nobody cares when half the kids are sharing sandwiches and not one of them ever says, “C’mon Joey, come eat with us.” Nobody cares when the popular kids make all the decisions for next week. Why do they stand in front of me so I can’t see what they’re doing, Joey thinks to himself? Why do they never talk to me? I know. I have always known. It’s because I can’t hit a baseball, can’t throw a softball, can’t even land a snowball on the i...

Please join us in voting “Yes” for the Cheney Public School bond and levy on the Feb. 10 ballot. • More violence creates more problems

    Updated Feb 5, 2015

Four weeks reading the internationally-oriented, Taipei-based China Post while visiting family in Taiwan rekindled musings on the fundamental question of whether U.S. Middle East military action creates more terrorists than it eliminates, particularly considering the empowered terrorist recruitment inevitable when innocent civilians and children are killed. Dismissing this question, the Bush administration attacked Iraq and attempted nation building despite no initial internal revolt, a big failure as evidenced by the recent...

  • Seattle's loss is a chance for all-around team building

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Feb 5, 2015

Hi. How you doing? Are you still angry? Blood pressure still up? I hope not. It’s not good for you, not a healthy thing to retain anger, hold grudges. I’ll not rehash the way last Sunday’s Super Bowl ended for our boys in the Emerald City, the Seattle Seahawks. Not only would it be akin to rubbing salt in wounds with sandpaper, but I think there’s a certain amount of sadism too. Besides, we’ve got years of that to look forward to on our multitude of sports channels. Like Seahawks fans everywhere, I too was sent into a st...

    Updated Feb 5, 2015

Come this Sept. 5 in Eugene, Ore. a player who’s been not just an integral part of the Eastern Washington University football team for the last three years, but more-or-less its face, could possibly be opposite his teammates and friends on the turf of Autzen Stadium. “Big Play V.A.,” otherwise known as quarterback Vernon Adams, could very well take his incredible athletic skills south and don the uniforms of many colors worn by the Oregon Ducks. The thought of Adams departing evokes all kinds of conjecture, questions and l...
