  • Medical Lake boys go in reverse with winless week

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Feb 1, 2018

The road to a revival for the Medical Lake boys basketball team got buried by an avalanche, or something like it last week. After winning four games in a row to vault them back into a challenging role in the upcoming Northeast A League and district playoffs, the Cardinals went in reverse, losing a pair of NEA games, plus two nonleague contests. On Jan. 23 at home, Medical Lake fell to Newport 76-56. That was followed the next night with a 60-50 nonleague loss to Kellogg, last...

The Cheney High girls basketball team dropped a pair of Great Northern League games last week to the Spokane Valley schools. The Lady Blackhawks lost a tight contest to visiting West Valley, 53-47, on Tuesday, Jan. 23, and despite staying close to East Valley on the road, eventually fell to the top-ranked 2A Knights 63-55 Saturday. Maggie Smith led Cheney in scoring in both games, tallying 14 against the Eagles and 16 at East Valley. Brette Draper and Hailee Huff each added 10 against the Knights, with Haley Pemberton...

  • Hopefully Edgar isn't too specialized for the 'Hall'

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Feb 1, 2018

At least he’s closer. The “he” I’m referring to is Edgar Martinez, former Seattle Mariners famed designated hitter extraordinaire. The close is Edgar’s drive to selection to Major League Baseball’s Hall of Fame. The Baseball Writers Association of America announced the National Baseball Hall of Fame class of 2018 on Jan. 24 and alas, once again Martinez’s name was left off. The two-time American League battling champion received 70.4 percent of the writers’ votes, but needed 75 percent to qualify for the Hall. That’s be...

  • Blackhawk boys 'put it to' West Valley

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Feb 1, 2018

The Cheney High boys basketball team pulled off a sweep of the Great Northern League’s Spokane Valley schools last week — the crowning jewel of which was a 22-point thumping of second-place West Valley. Blackhawks head coach Gregg Smith said the home win, while maybe not the equalizer, helped put a little salve on the two previous losses to the Eagles. Cheney fell 65-56 on the road on Jan. 9 and 57-55 at home Dec. 8 on a buzzer-beating basket. “We flat put it to them,” Smith said of the Jan. 23 home game. “I think the guys...

Next up is district competition Friday (4 p.m.) and Saturday (10 a.m.) at Deer Park with the Cardinals well represented. "We are taking 25 to...

  • Bliznyuk is new EWU scoring king

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Feb 1, 2018

He may have gone off script, but Bogdan Bliznyuk did a great job of ad-libbing as he broke the all-time scoring record for Eastern Washington University men's basketball. According to Eagles' radio play-by-play voice, Larry Weir, the original plan for Bliznyuk to score the two points needed to surpass his former teammate, Venky Jois' 1,803 points was to receive an Alley-oop pass from someone and throw down a thundering jam on their first possession. As it turned out, the...
