Lady Blackhawks drop pair in Great Northern League play

The Cheney High girls basketball team dropped a pair of Great Northern League games last week to the Spokane Valley schools. The Lady Blackhawks lost a tight contest to visiting West Valley, 53-47, on Tuesday, Jan. 23, and despite staying close to East Valley on the road, eventually fell to the top-ranked 2A Knights 63-55 Saturday.

Maggie Smith led Cheney in scoring in both games, tallying 14 against the Eagles and 16 at East Valley. Brette Draper and Hailee Huff each added 10 against the Knights, with Haley Pemberton scoring 13 against West Valley.

The Lady Blackhawks fall to 7-11 overall, 3-7 in GNL play, one game back of West Valley at 4-7, 9-10 overall. Solidly ensconced in the No. 4 seed, Cheney still has a chance to move up in the playoff pairings, but needs some help this week.

The Lady Blackhawks hosted last-place Pullman (1-9, 4-14) Tuesday in the home season finale on Tuesday, and travels Friday to take on second-seeded and 12th-ranked Clarkston (8-3, 13-4). Meanwhile, West Valley wrapped up its regular season by hosting Clarkston Jan. 30.

A win by the Eagles would secure them the No. 3 seed and a first-round game as they own the season tiebreaker with Cheney 2-1. A loss and two Lady Blackhawks wins could vault them over West Valley and into the playoff home game position.

If Cheney splits their final games and West Valley loses, the Eagles still finish third by virtue of the tiebreaker.
