No, this is no April Fool's joke. You all will be hearing and most likely saying a few of the jokes yourself. Enjoy the day and be nice. I have no idea how March will go out, as a lamb or lion, regardless we cannot do a thing about the weather. We gardeners always survive the days as they com... Full story

  • Of Cabbages and Kings

Some organizations should make their names more fitting By LUELLA DOW Contributor What do some words really mean? This is not a subject one could use for college credits, but there are mysteries within, some laughable, some profound, some worth a passing thought. The first thing that comes to my mind is the euphemism entitled “Correction Center.” Correction, as listed in the dictionary, means to reprove, amend, reform and “right on, brother.” If you're encased in a cell in the “right on, brother,” I guess that's better than... Full story

  • Medical Lake soccer looks to stay on roll as GNL big dogs loom

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter Medical Lake soccer coach Zane Higgins can’t find much to complain about so far in 2010. His Cardinals are undefeated through five games and un-scored on as well. The Cards finished last week with a 2-0 win over Clarkston at home and picked off Deer Park, 1-0 on the road to move their Great Northern League record to 4-0. While they have the week off from GNL play – resuming next Tuesday hosting Pullman and on the road at West Valley on Thursday, both games starting at 4 p.m. – the Cardinal...

  • Medical Lake baseball hopes to carry good start into strong finish

Cards thin line-up to be stretched to the max as players all fill utility roles By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter For the first time in years, Medical Lake’s baseball team is able to actually play on their home turf. No gym, no parking lots, no road trips to find a dry field. And whether that’s been the reason the Cards have clicked off a pair of victories to start the season is unknown. Bottom line is that coach TJ Smith is liking how things are going and he just hopes it can continue when the Cards face Deer Park Satu...

  • Cheney girls’ tennis falls at Pullman, West Valley in Great Northern openers

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor With 40 girls on the varsity/junior varsity rosters, new Cheney High School girls tennis head coach Corey Anderson has two tasks. First, prepare an experienced core of varsity returnees for playoff action and second, bring along some young talent in order to prepare for the future. Anderson said the Blackhawks’ strength right now is probably in their doubles teams, but that isn’t to imply the singles are weak. It’s more a situation of getting players who’s varsity experience for the...

  • Lady Hawks’ softball finds a way to beat Prosser on the road

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor It’s often referred to as “winning ugly.” Finding ways to win when things aren’t going right is often the hallmark of a good team. The Lady Hawks wasted little time offensively, leading off with consecutive singles by Samee Silvieus, Sierra Vijarro and Nicole Lane, taking the early...

Seven varsity players return from last year's squad, but like the girls team, several of those played doubles last year. The challenge this year will be to get their minds into the singles game. Junior David Dene...

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor Gaining experience and getting tuned up for coming competition was the Cheney track teams modus operandi last Thursday at the Ezra Gordon Invitational meet in Colville. The Blackhawks fielded a complement consisting mostly of freshmen and sophomores, with a few varsity juniors and seniors added into the mix, with the boys finishing ninth overall out of 19 teams and the girls 12 out of 17.
