Pitching carries Blackhawks

Cheney ends regular season with 3 wins

SPOKANE — Cheney baseball put an end to a three game Greater Spokane League losing streak last week in a memorable manner.

The Blackhawks earned back-to-back wins over Ferris, 10-3 and 6-3, and then North Central, 14-4 with pitchers all notching complete games.

Quinn Hubbs tossed a three-hit, 10 strikeout game April 23 in Cheney against the Saxons (2-15). He added his bat to the mix, too, stroking a pair of hits — including a home run – while scoring twice and driving in a pair of runs.

Tate Heuschkel had three hits while Brayden Martin and Carter McPherson each had a pair of hits. Cheney broke a scoreless tie with a pair of runs in the second, followed by back-to-back four-run innings in the third and fourth.

It was Heuschkel’s turn on April 25 as he went seven innings for the win allowing just one earned run. Martin backed that effort with his bat collecting a pair of hits and scoring two.

The teams played four scoreless innings before Cheney put up four runs in the top of the fifth, adding insurance with scores on the sixth and seventh.

McPherson completed the string April 26 at North Central (1-16) crafting his complete game while striking out five and giving up just one walk in a five-inning 10-run rule game.

Four Blackhawks had a pair of hits in the game including Jacob Ulrich, Marcus Belarde, Martin and McPherson as Cheney broke a 2-2 tie with a five-run third and six in the fourth.

Cheney concluded the GSL season April 30 against North Central and as the No. 5 seed is scheduled to plat at Mt. Spokane, May 4.
