Man arrested for eluding police officer

CHENEY – Jakob D. Petitto, 30, was apprehended by Cheney police officers on charges of eluding a police officer during a routine traffic stop, possession of a controlled substance, and outstanding warrants from Idaho. The arrest took place in the 700 block of First Street.

According to Police Chief Rick Beghtol, Petitto attempted to evade authorities but was successfully apprehended by Officer Sullivan. Notably, following the arrest, law enforcement discovered a firearm in close proximity to Cheney Middle School. Investigations are underway to determine if the weapon is linked to Petitto.

“He got out and fled on foot and one of our officers was able to get him into custody, but the next day we found a gun that was near Cheney Middle School, so we’re trying to figure out if that was his. He was charged for the possession of drugs, and then for looting, he had an active warrant out of Idaho, and we believe that gun was associated with him,” stated Chief Beghtol.

Petitto faces a litany of charges, including felony eluding, possession of controlled substances (methamphetamine and fentanyl), and outstanding warrants. Chief Beghtol confirmed Petitto’s booking into Spokane County Jail.

“They got him that night, he fled on foot and was taken into custody that night,” Chief Beghtol added.
