Cheney softball wins 3-of-4 games

CHENEY — The Blackhawks girls fastpitch softball team started out last week on the rugged side, but finished strong with three consecutive Greater Spokane League victories.

The Blackhawks were beaten at home 15-0 by Mount Spokane, but turned things around to capture wins 16-6 at Ferris on March 21, 19-6 at Lewis and Clark on March 22 and 16-6 at Ridgeline on March 25.

Scoring seven runs in the first and another five in their next turn at the plate, GSL power Wildcats (4-0 GSL, 5-1 overall) raced to the win.

A six-run fifth inning broke a 5-5 tie and the Blackhawks (3-1, 3-3), behind the two hits and four RBI from Mia Ashcroft topped the Saxons.

Ashcroft’s four hits, including a pair of doubles, powered Cheney past LC at Hart Field. Sedona Ericson and Maddy Hurley each had three hits.

In a game originally scheduled to be played in Cheney but moved to Ridgeline due to field conditions, the Blackhawks scored a run-in the sixth for a 7-5 lead and added five in the seventh for an added cushion.

Four Cheney players had multiple hits with Millie Beito leading the way with four hits in five plate appearances and a pair of RBI. Allie Halverson for 3-for-5 with an RBI, Ericson went 2-for-5 with a home run, double and three RBI with Alyssa Marlow at 2-for-4.

For the week Ericson was 7-for-12 and Ashcroft 6-for-9. Hurley pitched 15 and 2/3rds innings striking out 23.

Coach Gary Blake reported that his pitching corps just got a bit deeper with Maya De La Cruz being cleared to play following time off due to a concussion.

Cheney was on the road at University on March 27 and hosted Mead on March 28 before taking the spring break and resuming play on April 9.
