Cardinals toss no-hitter, then get no-hitM

MEDICAL LAKE — Medical Lake baseball opened its season much like it did in 2023 with a no hit victory over Connell March 12 in a doubleheader sweep, 28-1 and 15-2.

The Cardinals, however, found themselves on the opposite side of things losing their final three contests to Rogers 11-7 and Tri Cities Prep 17-7 and 19-0, that last game a no hitter.

AJ Michaud not only threw a five-inning complete game no hitter at Connell, but also had five hits and four RBI. Levi Brower had three hits and 5 RBI while Kyle Kipp’s two hist produced six RBI.

Taylor Oliver pitched a 3-hit complete game in the second contest and added three hits and as many RBI. Michaud also drove in three with his three hits. Clint Zimmerman had a triple and 2 RBI with his pair of hits.

Rogers broke a 2-all tie scoring four runs in the fourth and adding five more in the fifth. Medical Lake’s Ian Thompson had the only multiple-hit game for the Cardinals.

Medical Lake faced 80-mph pitching and the defending 2B state champion Jaguars in near 80-degree weather in Tri-Cities.

Oliver and Zimmerman each went 2-for-3 with Zimmerman batting in three and Oliver two.

The Cardinals face a rugged slate of games this week with defending league champ Colville visiting for a double-header starting at noon, March 23 followed by traveling to Deer Park (March 26) and hosting Freeman (March 30) for a pair.

SOCCER

Cardinals have winless week

MEDICAL LAKE — Medical Lake’s boys’ soccer team finished its week 0-3 following losses to Riverside, 5-0, March 12, West Valley, 4-1, March 14 and on March 15 to Cheney 2-1.

The Cardinals opened Northeast A League play at Riverside where the Rams broke a scoreless tie with three goals six minutes apart.

Mavrick Rasmussen’s goal off a header from a corner kick in the 25th minute cut West Valley’s 2-1 first half lead. But the Eagles notched and insurance goal with a score in the 36th minute on the way to this non-league victory.

Late in a scoreless tie at Sheppard Field, Cheney got a goal from Branson Kennicut in the 69th minute but Rasmussen evened things with a penalty kick at 75 minutes.

Viliami Finau, however, scored on a corner kick for Cheney in stoppage time at 79 minutes for the win.

“The boys played great, and really pushed the action with Cheney,” assistant coach Dan Collins wrote in an email.

Medical Lake (0-1 NEA, 1-3 overall) hosted Northwest Christian, March 19 and was on the road at Newport, March 21 — both league contests — before playing at Quincy, Saturday, March 23.
