Blackhawks score track wins at Lewiston

Strawn sets new pole vault record

CHENEY — The Cheney track team continued its warmup for Greater Spokane League competition with a jamboree at North Central High School, March 13 and a trip to Lewiston, March 15 for the Sweeney Invitational.

While the NC event was mainly designed for junior varsity competitors, Cheney did send vaulters, high jumpers and pole vaulters. In the latter competition Andrew Strawn established a new school record in the pole vault where his 14-foot effort broke the former school record of 13 feet, 10 inches.

At Lewiston, the Blackhawks had notable wins including Ian Martin’s school record 2 minute, 5.34 second effort in the 800 meters.

Calvin Hilton also established a new program record in the 1,600 meters at 4:25.17. Hilton also clocked a 9:29 to capture the individual title in the 1,600.

Clara Brown and Joy Assonken finished 1-2 in the javelin with respective throws of 111 feet, 5 inches (PR) and 108-08 (SR).

Jonah Ward had a 153-0.5 personal record in the javelin while Hannah Ward’s 2:30.47 was a school record in the 800 meters.

Cheney competes in the Lewis and Clark Invitational Saturday, March 23 starting at 10 a.m.
