Couple arrested for abusing 7-year-old

AIRWAY HEIGHTS — A local couple has been arrested on charges they abused a 7-year-old boy.

Marie L. Collins, 29, and Jared E. Reeves, 32, were booked into the Spokane County Jail on March 6, records show.

They are facing charges of child assault, criminal mistreatment and unlawful imprisonment.

Law enforcement launched the investigation after receiving alarming information from a staff member at Sacred Heart Medical Center.

A state Child Protective Services caseworker had brought in a 7-year-old boy showing signs of extensive bruising and significant weight loss following the winter break, records show. Concerns had also been raised by a Sunset Elementary School counselor, who noticed unexplained injuries to the child’s face and a substantial decrease in weight.

The counselor also reported instances where the child was scavenging food and drink from school garbage bins, records show.

As a result, detectives conducted a investigation.

Their efforts resulted in the gathering of evidence, leading to the filing of felony charges against the child’s mother, Collins, and her boyfriend, Reeves, an active duty airman at Fairchild Air Force Base.
