Man arrested for burglary of boarded-up house

SPOKANE VALLEY — A local man is facing charges after allegedly attempting to enter a vacant, boarded up house.

Jason A. Swan, 35, was arrested Feb. 19, booked into the Spokane County Jail and then freed on his own recognizance that same day after appearing before Spokane County Superior Court Judge R. Clary.

He is facing possible charges of third-degree theft, second-degree malicious mischief and two counts of residential burglary.

The charges stem from an 8:15 a.m. Feb 18 in which deputies responded to a possible burglary at a home in the 13200 block of East Main Street, records show.

A neighbor told authorities the homeowner had passed away and the decedent’s family was managing the property, records show. The neighbor said the home had previously been burglarized and was boarded up to stop thefts.

Responding deputies spotted Swan in the 13000 bock of East Sprague Avenue, records show. He matched the description of the purported burglar.

Deputies stopped Swan, who said he had just been at his home and found it boarded up, records show. He then rephrased, saying he had only lived there a few days.

Swan claimed a friend named “Red” acquired the house and was allowing him to stay there.

Deputies contacted representatives of the estate, who advised nobody has permission to be in the home, records show.

The house had previously been burglarized Jan. 30, records show. Water lines had been cut and the basement flooded.

After a contractor repaired the damage, the house was boarded up, records show.
