Cheney ousted in tie-breaker

SPOKANE —The Cheney boys saw their basketball season end in a playoff tiebreaker last week following a loss in their final Greater Spokane League game.

Cheney landed in a three-way tie with Ferris and Mead for the final playoff spot and played a tiebreaker Feb. 8 at Mead.

Ferris topped Cheney 25-22 in one three-quarter tiebreaker game with Coleman Randles scoring 8 to lead his team.

The host Panthers used a 17-10 second quarter to oust the Blackhawks in the second game, played for two quarters. Grayson Burton scored eight to lead his team.

In their GSL finale, senior Evan Stinson went out in a memorable way scoring 37 points in Cheney’s 61-58 loss at home to North Central (6-3, 15-5).

The Blackhawks finished 3-6 in GSL, 9-13 overall in head coach Travis Peevey’s second season.

Liberty boys in post-season

SPANGLE —The Liberty Lancers boys basketball team remained alive in the post season, topping opponents in district play Feb. 9 and 10.

On Friday, Feb. 9, Liberty ended Davenport’s season, 72-54.

Ethan Kimball scored 21 points and Lincoln Foland added 17 points for the Lancers (13-11, 8-6 in league). Jaeger Jacobsen scored 19 points for the Gorillas.

Then on Saturday, Feb. 10, Liberty topped Northwest Christian (Colbert), 63-57.

Jack Wilson sled the Lancers with 17 points; Lincoln Foland added 16.

Liberty hosts Okanogan in a District 6/7 crossover game Friday, Feb. 16. Tipoff is 5:30 p.m.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Liberty girls travel to Brewster

SPANGLE — The Liberty Lancer girls will head to Brewster on Friday, Feb. 16, for a District 6/7 crossover basketball game.

Tipoff is at 2 p.m.

The Lancers reached the post-season game by beating Lind-Ritzville/Sprague, 55-45, Feb. 9, then falling to Reardan, 59-48, on Feb. 10.

Against Lind-Ritzville, the Lancers led from start to finish.

The Broncos Zoe Galbreath led all scorers with 30 points.
