Cardinal boys reach playoffs

MEDICAL LAKE — Peaking at the right time in sports is critical to success and if winning three of their last four games in any indicator the Medical Lake boys basketball team is doing just that?

The Cardinals engineered a notable turnaround over this time a year ago, splitting their final two Northeast A League games and nabbing not only a playoff spot, but getting a home game to boot.

Medical Lake lost Jan. 30 at Freeman, 68-46, but dished up a fitting Senior Night performance Feb. 1 by topping Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls), 61-57 in overtime.

They finished the regular season 6-6 in the Northeast A league and 7-13 overall — a marked improvement from a year ago at 1-19.

The record earned them a Feb. 6 playoff game against Colville (3-9 NEA, 3-16 overall).

The newspaper went to press before gametime.

Against Lakeside, Cody Petersen’s 30-foot, 3-point shot from the top of the arc with 20 seconds remaining sent the game into OT.

“The crowd went wild,” Coach Brett Ward said “We hit some big free throws in overtime to secure the W.”

Mavrick Rasmussen’s 20 led the Cards with Petersen adding 14.

Two pivotal periods powered the NEA’s top team, Freeman (12-0, 18-2) as the Scotties topped the Cards, 23-9, in the second and 16-8 in the fourth.

Taylor Oliver led Medical Lake with 9 points.
