Commute trip reduction pact passes

CHENEY – In a unanimous Jan. 23 decision, the City Council approved Resolution F-222, an interlocal agreement with Spokane County on sustainable commuting practices.

LeAnn Yamamoto, county Transportation Planning Manager, highlighted the importance of the updated intergovernmental agreement.

“We have an intergovernmental agreement that’s been updated,” she said.

The focus of the agreement is working with businesses to encourage carpooling and public transportation.

Under the Washington State Commute Trip Reduction law of 1991, Commute Smart has been the lead agency for Spokane County since 1993, working collaboratively to implement commute trip reduction strategies.

Three areas in Cheney are particularly affected by the initiative as urban growth areas, including Eastern Washington University’s campus.

Key requirements include surveying employers every two years, reviewing community programs annually, providing required employee transportation and establishing models for public and private partnerships.

Cheney’s commitment to the cause is evident in the allocation of over $20,000 for the period of 2023-2025.

Yamamoto emphasized the positive impact.

“Each day, 8,300 trips are reduced, which equates to 141,000 miles not driven,” she said.
