Greyhounds race past Blackhawks

CHENEY – Pullman dominated the competition in a Jan. 20 swim meet against Cheney at the Eastern Washington University Aquatics Center winning 10 of the 12 events for a 286-124 victory.

Cheney did win the 100-yard breaststroke, sweeping the top three spots led by Artem Sokolov in a time of 1 minute, 19.82 seconds. Alma Smith (1:32.19) and Samuel Dalton (1:42.98) were second and third.

Smith also won the 1-meter diving but was the only participant.

Tanner Nelson was the Blackhawks’ lone runner-up with a time of 5:37.58 in the 500-yard freestyle.

Next for Cheney is a meet Jan. 27 at Whitman College in Walla Walla.

WRESTLING:

Ferris finishes strong in win over Cheney

CHENEY – Local wrestlers started off strong with three consecutive wins but most of the rest of the momentum belonged to Ferris as the Saxons topped the Blackhawks 43-30 in Greater Spokane League competition Jan. 18.

Kaden Rasmussen (144 pounds), Shadrach Mason (150) and Jacob Estock (157) each won weight classes to open the match. Mason and Estock both won with pins, Mason in just 28 seconds and Estock after 1 minute, 28 seconds.

Cheney’s Trenton Moore (175) and Gauge Seubert (190) also pinned their opponents giving the Blackhawks a sizable lead. Moore won in 2:28 and Seubert took just 25 seconds to prevail.

After that, the Saxons took over with six wins in the next seven bouts. Cameron Bogle’s victory at 132 pounds was Cheney’s long win.

Cheney, 4-3 in GSL competition, had a pair of home matches to close out the regular season, Jan. 23 vs. Mead and Jan. 25 against Gonzaga Prep at 7 p.m.

Riverside rolls over Medical Lake

MEDICAL LAKE – Riverside captured four of the first five weight classes, all by forfeit, and went on to defeat Medical Lake win Northeast A League wrestling 53-27, Jan. 19 at home.

Abram Kane won by a pin at 113-pounds to break up the Rams’ opening run.

Lyla Heinemann (138) scored the first of two consecutive wins for the Cardinals with a pin and Mason Wobble followed with a forfeit at 144.

Riverside won the next five weights before Medical Lake’s True Cole (215) pinned his opponent and Silas Dutton (285) collected a 5-0 win.

Medical Lake (1-4 NEA) closed out league competition hosting Freeman on Jan. 24 and hosts district rounds Feb. 2.
