Cheney police host clothing drive

CHENEY – Police are hosting a clothing drive through Feb. 1 for survivors of domestic violence and their families.

“This initiative was born from my personal experience as a survivor of domestic violence and as the sole person working in the Cheney Police Department’s DV Unit,” officer Cheyanne Walters said. “We aim to collect clothing donations until Feb. 1 to support survivors in need.”

“Our collaboration primarily involves partnering with several DV shelters affiliated with the YWCA and the Kalispel Tribe,” Walters said. “These shelters offer crucial support to survivors, and our donations will directly benefit those utilizing their services.

“Furthermore, as a precautionary measure, we’ll retain a supply of items at the Police Department to assist in emergencies where immediate clothing is necessary for survivors seeking help.”

Police hope to gather at least 30 bins worth of clothing. They’ve already received contributions from Police Department employees amounting to six bins’ worth, she said, noting police are accepting used clothing for children, teens, women and men.

Clothing must be washed and dropped off in plastic bags or in the bins at the department lobby, 215 G St.
