Cardinals wrap up preseason

Play pair of games at West Valley Tournament

SPOKANE VALLEY – The Medical Lake boys basketball winds down the preseason with a pair of games this week last the West Valley tournament in Spokane knowing at least a couple of things to be true.

In their 2-6 start under new Coach Brett Ward, the Cardinals have already doubled the win output of the entire 2022-23 season. And one of those victories put them at 1-0 in Northeast A League play.

“I’m happy with our league win,” Ward said. “That’s the most important record and we are 1-0.”

The Cardinals have two more opportunities with which to have a better barometer for the NEA season that resumes Jan. 3 when they visit Riverside.

Those come at West Valley where on Dec. 28 at 9 a.m. they take on Tri Cities Prep, a 2B school with a so far perfect 8-0 record. Greater Spokane League 2A East Valley (1-5) is next on Dec. 29 at 10:30 a.m.

“I’ve been happy with our work ethic,” Ward said. “Even after tough losses, we’ve come the next day with a good attitude and ready to work.”

What does Ward see as areas for improvement?

“We need to shoot the ball better from everywhere, inside outside,” he said. “We also can grind more defensively and rebounding.”
