Two area girls medal at M2 Mallet

SPOKANE – Two Spokane Valley girls won medals Saturday, Dec. 23, at the M2 Mallet wrestling tournament at Rogers High School.

Wrestling at 190 pounds, Emma Brimwell of Ridgeline won a silver medal. And at 135 pounds, Samara Wienstock of University won bronze.

The Quincy girls won the team title with 119.5 points.

University finished 14th with 23.0 points and Ridgeline was 16th with 21.0. East Valley didn't score any team points.

Brimwell opened the tournament in the semifinals with a 2:37 pin of Clover Tannehill of Newport.

In the title bout, she was pinned by Eva Willis of Bonners Ferry in 2:19.

At 135 pounds, Wienstock had one of the largest weight classes.

She opened the tournament by pinning Kathryn Ambute-Gibson of Lewis and Clark in 2:45 and then Neveah Gonzalez of Deer Park in 2:46.

In the semifinals, she lost by fall to Michelle Acevedo of Quincy in 2:24.

In wrestleback rounds, Wienstock defeated Kristen Bennett of Republic, who defaulted due to an injury and then pinned Gonzalez again in 3:29 to win bronze.
