Man sentenced for Eastern campus threats

CHENEY - The man who threatened to bomb Eastern Washington Unviersity has been sentenced.

Last week, Spokane County Superior Court Judge Annette Plese sentenced Justin Hale, 26, to three months in jail with 15 days of the sentence converted to 120 hours of community service, according to records.

Hale is also prohibited from having contact with the university or coming within 1,000 feet of the campus for five years, court records show.

On Dec. 7, Hale pleaded guilty to charges of harassment; his original October arrest charge was for threatening to bomb or injure property.

Reports show Hale was on campus Oct. 19, gathering signatures against gender-inclusive and co-ed bathrooms in elementary schools.

During the process, several students disagreed with Hale, and reports show he became aggressive, records show. Hale said his table was knocked over and he was being harassed.

But one student witness claimed she got into an argument with Hale, and he said he would return the following day to “shoot up the school,” according to reports.

Court records show Hale has a criminal history of assault with sexual motivation and failing to register..
