Council increases utility rates

Rates hikes will continue for five years

CHENEY – The City Council voted Dec. 12 to increase certain utility rates and fees over the next five yars.

The rate plan, as explained by Public Works Director Todd Ableman, compared current rates to proposed future rates.

A resident with a current 20-gallon garbage can pays $8.09 per service. By 2028, the rate for that garbage can will increase to $18.53.

For the 96-gallon residential garbage can, the current service rate is $18.01, he said. By 2028, the rate will increase to $41.25.

In terms of commercial monthly rates, a 3-yard dumpster currently costs $154.55 per service. By 2028, the rate will be $170.60, he said.

Sewer rates will also increase.with the phase-in of a reclamation facility.

Currently a single-family residential home has a rate of $37.17 per 1,000-cubic feet. By 2028, the rates will increase to $49.15.

Hotels and motels will avoid a rate increase, he said, noting the current service rate of $17.71 will remain the same over the next five years.

That’s not the case for other commercial and governmental buildings.

Commercial facilities, schools and industrial buildings have a current rate of $46.37. By 2028 they will be $70.54.

Ableman also said that the rate increases will allocate some money to be put back for future projects.

“The FCS study is taking a look at operations and maintenance and how to sustain that,” Ableman said. “But also pay any debt as far as the sewer goes.”

“Plus all the capital items that should be attended to.”
