Cardinal boys top Grizzlies

MEDICAL LAKE – The Cardinal boys basketball team had a pair of one-sided losses wrap themselves around a win last week.

While the Cardinals were thumped by Greater Spokane League, Rogers 70-26, Dec. 12 and 2B St. George's, 73-35, Dec. 18, they did win handily in their Northeast A League opener vs. Newport, 57-37, Dec. 15.

"They punched us in the mouth," head coach Brett Ward wrote in a text message regarding Rogers, which led 21-5 after the first quarter.

Trailing at halftime against Newport, 25-17, the Cardinals (2-4) clamped down of defense over the final two quarters and limiting the Grizzlies to single-digit scoring.

Mavrick Rasmussen scored 17 points and was the only ML player in double-digits.

"Mav played well, but he wasn't alone," Ward said. "We had great defense from Cody Peterson and Chuks Okembgo provided game changing energy. Lebo Holloway also had some huge buckets for us."

Like Rogers, St. Georges (8-1) was in high-gear to open the game and held a 41-16 half-time lead. Rasmussen and A.J. Michaud led Medical Lake with 8 points each.

Medical Lake faced GSL Shadle Park at home, Dec. 19 before taking some time away from competition prior to the West Valley Tournament. There the Cards meet Tri Cities Prep (Dec. 28) and GSL East Valley (Dec. 29).
