City to remove septic tanks

Sewer main planned for Garfield Avenue

AIRWAY HEIGHTS – City officials are moving ahead with plans to eliminate septic tanks along Garfield Avenue.

During the Dec. 11 City Council meeting, Public Works Director Kevin Anderson addressed the council, seeking approval for an amendment related to the Garfield Avenue Septic Tank Elimination Design Phase 2 project.

The aim of this project is to address and eliminate septic tank systems along Garfield Avenue, he said.

The council had previously approved four consultant work orders for projects partially funded through the state Department of Ecology.

Work Order No. 7, specifically addresses Garfield Avenue. But the project took an unexpected turn, necessitating additional services and an amendment to the original plan.

“Thanks for your patience,” Anderson said.

The city has received $199,000 from the state Department of Ecology for a new sewer main along Garfield Avenue.

The proposed amendment hires Commonstreet Consulting to provide additional property acquisition services necessary based on the preliminary evaluation of potential lift station locations.

“The original Ecology funding amount was $199,149,” he said. “With this amendment, the total design cost would be less at $191,100.”

The Garfield Avenue Septic Tank Elimination Design Phase 2 project, initially designed without accounting for property acquisition, prompted the city to seek additional support.

The unexpected need for property-related services led to the proposed amendment and a subsequent discussion at the council meeting.
