Domestic Violence suspect taken down after tense standoff

SPOKANE VALLEY - Spokane Valley Deputies successfully apprehended a domestic violence (DV) suspect after a tense standoff that involved the SWAT Team, Crisis Negotiators, and a K9 Unit.

The events unfolded on November 21, 2023, at approximately 7:45 am, when deputies received information that 50-year-old Travis C. Torman Sr., a DV suspect with a felony charge for Malicious Mischief 2nd Degree, was located at a residence in the 300 block of S. McDonald Road.

With previous statements indicating Torman’s potential for violence and self-harm, and armed with the knowledge that he might be in possession of a handgun, deputies approached the situation with caution.

Torman’s refusal to exit the residence triggered the involvement of the SWAT Team and Crisis Negotiators.

The standoff reached a critical point as Torman, observed inside with what appeared to be a pistol, resisted numerous attempts by law enforcement to peacefully surrender according to records.

Multiple announcements and negotiations proved fruitless, leading to the introduction of chemical irritants into the residence. This finally compelled Torman to exit, still defiant and resistant.

Investigators later discovered that the object Torman wielded was a homemade item designed to resemble a pistol. Despite the unconventional weapon, Torman’s arrest unfolded with the assistance of the K9 Unit and SWAT Team members.

Following the standoff, Torman received medical attention on-site and at the hospital before being booked into the Spokane County Jail on charges of felony Malicious Mischief 2nd Degree.
