Shooter then turned gun on self
MEDICAL LAKE - One juvenile girl was killed in a shooting in the 1000 block of S. Prentis St. in Medical Lake on Nov. 26. according to reports.
Initial information learned during the early stages of this investigation indicated this deadly incident appears to be a murder/attempted suicide according to reports.
The victim has been identified as sixth grader Lily Stolworthy, and the school district is looking to provide support for students, friends, family and faculty through the grieving process.
Medical Lake Superintendent, Kim Headrick released a statement to families on Nov. 27.
"With the family's permission, it is with deep sorrow that we share the the heartbreaking news of the passing of one of our sixth-grade students, Lily Stolworthy. Lily was involved in a domestic violence incident, and unfortunately, she did not survive," the statement read.
"We understand this difficult to process. As a system, we are coordinating crisis support for students and staff members who are impacted at each of our schools. The District's Wellness Center team, school counselors, and external agencies are working together to provide crisis counseling services as needed. We have also included resources that you can use to have conversations with your child regarding grief and loss."
Information also shows the incident started as a domestic violence situation between two siblings.
Deputies from the Spokane County Sheriff's Office responded to calls about a seriously injured female in the middle of Prentis St. at approximately 4:40 p.m.
The reporting person said the girl was severely injured but was not aware of how the injuries happened.
Initial information gained from witnesses and family members indicated the victim was contacted outside the residence by an adult male sibling. Reports also show witnesses heard what was described as either gunshots or a vehicle backfiring.
The man was then seen leaving in a Ford Mustang according to reports. The same car was found at approximately 5:00 p.m. in the 7200 block of N. Graham Road according to another report.
Reports show that the driver's side window had been shattered, likely by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Responders noticed a man slumped in the front seat of the car with a pistol in his hand according to records.
Detectives do not believe any suspects are outstanding or there is any ongoing threat to the public concerning this incident.
