New committee forms to help fund Cheney schools

Discussing possible bonds for district

CHENEY – In a recent development, a new committee has emerged in Cheney, led by founder Zachary Zorruzua.

The primary objective of the Committee for Support of Good Schools is to rally community support for the Cheney School District’s upcoming ballot measures—a levy and two bonds slated for February.

Zorruzua clarified that the levy’s primary focus is to sustain current educational programs at Cheney Schools, encompassing extracurriculars, clubs, and special education support.

He underscored, “The levy is what will allow Cheney School District to be great.”

The first bond, known as Proposition 2, targets building a new elementary school in Airway Heights.

Zorrozua highlighted the broader impact, stating, “Every Cheney kid will benefit from Proposition 2 because it will lower the number of kids at Cheney Schools.”

Additionally, the bond allocates funds for essential maintenance and updates to existing school facilities.

The second bond, the Capital Improvements Bond, is earmarked for instructional technology enhancements and improved safety measures, including updated surveillance cameras in schools.

When discussing strategies for garnering support, Zorrozua emphasized the importance of community awareness.

“Numbers don’t lie. If people know the information, there’s no reason not to vote for it,” he stated.

The committee plans to achieve this through diverse channels, including Facebook Live, Zoom meetings, and active participation in local events.

While an official count is not provided, Zorrozua mentioned having contact information for 65 engaged community members.

Meetings are open to the public, with options for virtual attendance via Zoom.

The committee was established on October 19th, with a subsequent meeting held on November 9th and a forthcoming one scheduled for November 27th at 6:30 pm at the Cheney Public Library.

Zorrozua shared that the committee has secured collaboration from construction companies, emphasizing their full support.

The aim is not just fundraising but also spreading the word actively within the community, as Zorrozua stated, “What I tell people what’s more important than money is getting the word out. We need active engagement.”

The committee has formed a strategic collaboration with Pacific Strategies Northwest, tapping into their expertise to identify and engage voters effectively.

Zorrozua provided insight into the financial aspects, mentioning the school board’s decision to set Proposition 2 at $72 million.

Efforts are underway to assess the impact on local communities, with a commitment to minimizing the burden on taxpayers.

The committee plans to interview school staff and actively participate in local events, including Winterfest in Airway Heights and the Cheney High School Craft Fair.

Zorrozua encouraged active engagement, stating, “The more people know, the more likely that they’re gonna vote yes.”

As the committee continues its efforts, community involvement remains key to the success of these initiatives.

The upcoming meeting on November 27th provides an opportunity for interested individuals to learn more and contribute to the cause.
