Deputies locate hunter

Man walked for eight hours

CHENEY – In a successful search and rescue operation, deputies from the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office located a lost hunter on the Columbia Plateau Trail southwest of Cheney.

The incident unfolded on November 14, 2023, around 5:20 pm, when deputies responded to a report of a lost hunter on the popular trail.

The adult man had been walking for eight hours, finding himself disoriented in the darkness and fog, unsure of which direction to take.

Despite facing challenges such as downed trees and limited access to the trail, Patrol Deputies were on the scene promptly, attempting to locate the missing individual. However, the difficult terrain impeded their efforts.

Spokane Regional Emergency Communications operators played a crucial role in the operation, managing to determine a general location for the lost hunter even as his cell phone registered less than 5% battery power.

Recognizing the need for specialized assistance, Search and Rescue Deputies were called in and equipped with ATVs to navigate the challenging landscape.

After an extensive search, they successfully located the cold and tired adult male on the trail, positioned to the south and east of the intersection at S. Mullenix Road and S. Harmony Road.

Despite his ordeal, the lost hunter declined medical assistance but expressed relief at being contacted by the deputies.
