Best of the West awards held

AIRWAY HEIGHTS - The West Plains Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual Best of the West Awards gala on the evening of November 1, bringing together hundreds of area residents at the Northern Quest Resort and Casino.

The event, a showcase of community, bravery, and the triumph over adversity, is a time-honored tradition that typically raises funds for the chamber’s activities.

However, this year’s gala took on a special significance as it channeled its resources into supporting recovery efforts from the Gray Fire, a devastating wildfire that had swept through the region earlier in the year.

The gala was a resounding success in terms of fundraising, largely due to the generosity of the attendees and the donated auction items.

Thousands of dollars were raised to aid the ongoing recovery efforts from the Gray Fire, a testament to the community’s resilience and unity in times of crisis.

Notably, Leadership Spokane contributed significantly to the cause, donating over $5,000 to Re*Imagine Medical Lake for their dedicated work in the recovery efforts. Their commitment demonstrated the collaborative spirit of the region in helping those affected by the disaster.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of prestigious awards to individuals and businesses that have made significant contributions to the West Plains community.

Chris Bornhoft, was named Business Leader of the Year for his exceptional efforts in driving various projects in the West Plains area.

Along with his wife, Marianne the combined initiatives from Bornhoft Commercial have brought several projects to the region.

West Plains Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, Mark Losh, first highlighted the achievements of Bornhoft Commercial.

“They have brought innovative projects such as the Garage Lodge by Airway Heights, and a 36-unit apartment complex in Cheney,” Losh said. “Their efforts have infused over $14 million into the local economy of the West Plains.”

Bornhoft said the efforts of his team and the support of business partners helped keep the projects moving forward and it wouldn’t be possible without them.

Educators of the Year awards were presented to Courtnie Mirabelli and Sara Lamb for their exceptional contributions to the education community in Cheney and Medical Lake, respectively.

Several awards were given to different Airmen for their efforts with Fairchild Air Force Base as well.

Redemption Church in Medical Lake was acknowledged as the Non-Profit of the Year for their significant and meaningful work in the community.

Bornhoft, who was introducing the winners, said Redemption Church really stepped up to help people affected by the Gray Fire.

“This church has grown into a pillar of support and hope on the West Plains,” Bornhoft said. “Especially during the Gray Fire crisis.”

“In the face of the disaster they provided people with food, clothing, water and hygiene items.”

The gala also celebrated outstanding local businesses, with Bi-Mart being honored as Cheney Business of the Year and Billie’s Diner receiving the Business of the Year award for Airway Heights.

Dirt Worx was recognized as the Medical Lake Business of the Year, while Longhorn BBQ claimed the title of Spokane Business of the Year.

Bob McConkey received the Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his unwavering dedication to West Plains business.

McConkey’s longstanding commitment to the region has left an indelible mark on the local business landscape according to the chamber.

In a heartwarming tribute to the first responders who played a vital role in managing the Gray Fire, a large banner was displayed at the event for guests to sign.
