Measure 1 aims for criminal justice challenges

60 percent of revenue will be for county jails

CHENEY — On Tuesday, October 24, the Cheney City Council convened to discuss Measure 1, a proposed Law & Justice initiative for the county.

The Council invited Patrick Bell, Director of Communications for Spokane County, to present the details and implications of the measure.

The measure centers around the introduction of a new 0.2% sales tax on purchases, slated to begin on April 1, 2024, and extend until the close of December 2054.

The revenue generated from this tax is designed to serve three primary purposes: criminal justice, public safety and behavioral health needs.
