MEDICAL LAKE – The Cardinal girls soccer team concludes what will likely be more of a forgettable than memorable season Oct. 19 at home vs. Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) for Senior Day.
The game takes place under the lights of Holliday Field at 6 p.m.
It is an understatement to say this has been a long season for the winless (0-16) Cardinals, but for large parts of the season that have played entire matches shorthand.
“We have had a few games with 11 to start,” head coach Dan Collins wrote in an email. But many were played with just nine. “It’s been very frustrating and demoralizing for me and the girls.”
While not the year thought it would be, Collins echoed an old saying when looking towards the future. “But, what doesn’t kill us, makes us stronger, right?”
Last week Medical Lake lost 7-0 to Newport (Oct. 10), Deer Park 6-0 (Oct. 12) and 9-1 to Riverside (Oct. 14).
“We played well against Newport and actually had two very good chances to score and only trailed at half 2-0,” Collins reported.
It was a similar case for the Cards against the Stags while playing with 10 players, Medical Lake trailed 3-0 at the break.
Against Riverside there were again, just 10 players, but Julie Chavez scored for the Cardinals, her sixth of the season.
“The beat goes on, the girls are a great group just small in size and low on experience,” Collins said.
