Woman apprehended for attempted retail theft

SPOKANE VALLEY – A Spokane woman was arrested Sept. 22 after allegedly attempting to steal a cart-load of merchandise from Walmart.

Breanna L. Stead, 32, was arrested at the 5025 E. Sprague Ave. store, records show. She was booked into the Spokane County Jail on a combined bail of $1,750.

Stead is charged with second-degree burglary, second-degree theft and 2nd-degree criminal trespass, all stemming from her recent theft attempt. Additionally, she was charged with an existing misdemeanor warrant for third-degree theft.

Her arrest occurred after Stead attempted to leave the store without paying for items in her cart, records show, noting her brazen attempt to bypass the point of sale terminals immediately raised suspicions.

A Spokane County Sheriff’s Office deputy assisted the guard and approached Stead in the store’s parking lot, records show. The encounter resulted in Stead’s detention without incident.

Upon being informed of her rights, Stead opted to remain silent, and no further questioning ensued.

All stolen items, valued at $1,319.31, were successfully recovered and returned to the store, mitigating the financial loss resulting from the attempted theft, records show. A background check revealed Stead had been previously trespassed from the same Walmart location due to prior misconduct, records show. Furthermore, at the time of her apprehension, she had an outstanding misdemeanor warrant for a third-degree theft charge.
