FOOTBALL:

U-Hi tops Cheney, 40-14

SPOKANE -- In a battle for the bottom of the Greater Spokane League football standings, the University Titans rolled over Cheney, 40-14, in a Sept. 22 afternoon game at U-Hi.

“Our offense was not consistent,” Coach Bobby Byrd said. “And turnovers led to our defense being on the field too much.”

Blackhawks’s quarterback Sam Coffin finished with a 14-for-24 with 119 yards, but threw four interceptions.

Kordell Laher led Cheney receivers with five catches for 47 yards in an offense that only had 155 total yards.

Camden Collins scored twice for Cheney, once on an 80-yard kickoff return and the other a 24-yard pass before half.

At 7 p.m. this Friday, Sept. 29, Cheney (0-4) hosts Lewis and Clark (1-3) on Tom Oswald Field.

Eastern returns to Top 25 poll

CHENEY — The Eastern Washington Eagles are back in familiar territory.

After opening the season unranked for the first time since 2007, the Eagles jumped back into the national polls after their 27-24 win over then-15th-ranked UC Davis on Saturday night.

Eastern came in at 19th in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 media poll and 25th in the AFCA Coaches Poll.

Eastern has taken down ranked opponents in back-to-back weeks to improve to 2-2 overall this season. They beat No. 19 Southeastern Louisiana at home, 40-29 on Sept. 16.

With Eastern’s first appearance this season, the Big Sky gained a seventh ranked team. Montana State, coming off a 40-0 Big Sky shutout of Weber State, led the way at No. 3.

Whitworth hosts military night Sept. 30

SPOKANE – Veterans and active duty military personnel will be recognized Saturday, Sept. 30, during the football game in the Pine Bowl.

Whitworth is hosting Pacific Lutheran.

Prior to the 1 p.m. kickoff, Military Appreciation Game day will include skydivers, a T-28 Trojan flyover a static Army helicopter and unfurling of an 80-foot American flag.

“It’s such an honor to publicly recognize the men and women at Whitworth who selflessly served our great nation, Associate Director for Military and Veterans Outreach Phil LaBrie said. “I’m grateful to all the volunteers who help make this event happen.”

Eagles get first Big Sky win

OGDEN, Utah — Eastern Washington earned its first Big Sky Conference soccer victory, Sept. 24 rallying to top Weber State 2-1 and even their record to 1-1 in conference play and 2-9 overall. 

The Eagles, who trailed 1-0 after an early Wildcat goal, had goals from Maddie Morgan, along with Riley Arribas’ first career score. Kiara Matson came off the bench in the second half and made five saves for Eastern to hold their one-goal lead. 

Eastern returns to Cheney to host Montana on Thursday, Sept. 28, with kickoff at 3:30 p.m. 

VOLLEYBALL:

Eagles drop conference home-opener

CHENEY — Eastern Washington volleyball could not utilize its home court advantage Sept. 23, falling to Montana 3-0 at Reese Court.

Kate Hatch led the Eagles with two aces while Tanai Jenkins set a career-high with seven kills .

The Eagles fall to 0-2 in the Big Sky and 6-8 on the season overall. Eastern is back on the road to play Idaho State on Sept. 28 and Weber State on Sept. 30.
