Cheney drops GSL opener

Mount Spokane got two first half goals from Lily Romey in the 35th and 38th minutes to lead the Wildcats over Cheney in the Greater Spokane League soccer opener Sept. 18.

Ellerie O’Regan got Cheney on the board with a goal assisted by Paige Evans in the 73rd minute. Clara Browne had 12 saves for the Blackhawks who were outshot 15-9.

Earlier in the week Cheney scored a 6-0 non-league win over 2A Shadle Park as six different Blackhawks scored.

Alex Miller (4th minute), Paige Evans (14th minute) and Grace Grumbly (36th minute) gave Cheney a 3-0 halftime lead. Kayelee Kohlman (44th minute), O’Regan (59th minute) and Kinley Collins (61st minute) completed scoring.

Brown had three saves in recording her second shutout of the season.

Cheney played Central Valley on Sept. 20 at Liberty High School to honor seniors Grumbly and Ellie Fisk who are students at the Spangle school and travel to Lakeside Sept. 22 for a 4 p.m. non-league game. They remain on the road playing at Gonzaga Prep, 6:30 p.m. Sept. 25.

Shorthanded Cardinals struggle

Hampered by both low numbers and injuries, Medical Lake soccer remains winless through Sept. 19.

Medical Lake (0-2 NEA, 0-5 overall), playing with just nine players lost to Northwest Christian 8-0, Sept. 14 and 9-0 at Newport the following day.

“We are still playing with nine eligible players,” head coach Dan Collins wrote in an email. Injuries are playing a part in the numbers dilemma.

As if the outcomes have not been painful enough, in the Newport match the Grizzlies recorded an “own goal” Collins reported. The ball caromed off the cross bar and hit the Cardinals’ keeper in the head and went in.
